In my opinion, there are two things that you shouldn't save a lot on - a backpack and shoes. Since in one of them you can walk all day, and carry the other on your beloved back for an equally long time. About shoes another time, and today about how to choose a backpack for a hike. Remember, there are no universal backpacks! I myself already have several backpacks of different sizes for different purposes.

How to choose a backpack

Backpack volume

First you need to decide on backpack volume, measured in liters, and accordingly with its purpose. The longer your hike, the larger your backpack should be. But, for example, for climbing, they also use small backpacks, since the main things remain in the alpine camp. So the recommended volume of the backpack:

- For small outings to nature for a weekend, for example, a backpack of 40-50 liters or so will do.
- For hiking you need to look for something in the region of 70-100 liters. Women, as a rule, carry a backpack of no more than 40-70 liters.
- For water and ski trips- 90-120 liters. There are many more things here.

It makes sense to take a backpack from someone and try to fill it, or even better, go on a hike with it. After that, you can immediately understand a lot for yourself. And how to choose a backpack, and what is a backpack for a hike. There is a saying that no matter how large a backpack is, it is always filled completely. That is, the smaller you have a backpack, the less you will have to carry unnecessary things, but you need to know when to stop.

Designing the right backpacks

All modern designs are approximately the same, and when choosing a backpack for a hike, one must be guided by the obligatory presence of the backpack's back adjustment according to the person's height and the presence of a waist belt. It is best to try on a loaded backpack, since the convenience of an empty one is difficult to assess. If the backpack does not have the above listed things, then this is not the right backpack, take pity on your back and shoulders. The right harness is the key to proper load distribution.

Important nuances

  • The hip belt should support its full weight when correctly adjusted. It should be slightly below the waist, on the protruding thigh bones.
  • The straps were supposed to be soft, but firm, and not too thin.
  • The distance between the straps should correspond to the width of your shoulders - the straps should not slip.
  • There must be metal or plastic armor in the back of the backpack. They are usually inside the back and cannot be seen.

Other points to look out for when choosing a backpack for hiking:

- The quick release flap is better than the one sewn to the backpack.
- The presence of additional pockets is convenient, but for example the side pockets can get in the way if you wade through the thicket.
- The side straps must be long enough to fit a rug or a small tent.
- Almost all backpacks have a lower compartment with separate access to it, and this is very convenient for dividing the internal space.
- The presence of a rain cover is good.
- The weight of a modern backpack is about 2.5 kg, if it weighs much more, then it is better to look even more.
- The fabric of the backpack must be strong and the seams well stitched. It is good when the bottom is made of cordura fabric.

Budget and firm

Chances are, the first backpack won't be the last. And after several hikes, you will know exactly which one you need. camping backpack... In hikes, there is usually someone to compare with. Therefore, it is not always worthwhile to immediately buy famous brands and overpay.

You can buy an inexpensive Russian backpack, for example, from Novatour or Equipment, something cheaper is unlikely to last long. If the budget allows, then you can look at such companies as Deuter and Tatonka, they make really good and strong backpacks. True, they are heavy (2-3 kg), there are a lot of bells and whistles. And if you are going on serious and long hikes (several weeks), then look for something lighter (light versions weigh about 1 kg), in this case every gram is saved. From branded and lightweight I like Thule.

There are a lot of companies producing backpacks, and you can go to choose and compare. Or, if there is Decathlon in your city, you can order in it. There are enough inexpensive and good models from the same Quecha. For your first backpack and first hike, you will definitely have enough choice in this store.

Life hack - when ordering online on the Decathlon website, but through a cashback service, there will be a return of 2.5-5% for all goods. If you are not yet in the know, then they have delivery, so you can order everything for yourself at home. By the way, there is not only Decathlon, but also a bunch of other stores.

If it seems to you that it is difficult to buy a backpack for the first time, then remember that you are not buying it for the rest of your life, and already when purchasing a second one, you will definitely be able to take into account all the nuances that turned out to be important for you. I mean that you have to try and get yours personal experience, nothing can replace it.

The evolution of my backpacks

I have been using hiking backpacks for 10 years, probably, if not more. And they are constantly changing. Some worn out, some just wanted to change. After all, if the backpack looks good outwardly, it is not a problem to sell it.

Any tourist, hunter or fisherman knows how important it is to choose the right backpack and with what care it is necessary to approach the choice of this means of moving your things, because it depends on this the number of things that you can afford to take on your next outing into nature. This is the most important purchase of all equipment. Comfortable backpack makes it much easier to carry loads, keeps your back and lower back healthy. survived a long stage of evolution, before they appeared in modern form... The first copies were canvas clothing bags with shoulder straps, better known as "koloboks", later began to produce prototypes of modern designs. After them, the frame "yermaks" came, and only then, the market was flooded anatomical backpacks .

Division of backpacks by type:

Back of the backpack.

Back of a backpack may have different thicknesses depending on the number and material of the inserts. The purpose of this design- protection of the back from a carelessly packed backpack, often - sweat wicking and a more even distribution of the load on the back. Ideally, there should be vertical wide elastic pads in the back for this. Sometimes it happens instead solid insert made of foam (this is worse!) or there is no pad at all, and the back consists only of backpack fabric(this option is highly discouraged!). On many modern models half-station backpacks("Anatomists") the so-called floating suspension or a floating system for securing the straps on the back. This allows you to fit backpack for a specific figure. IT IS VERY CONVENIENT! The most common option is to attach a double Velcro strap to a series of parallel horizontal lines. For each manufacturer, this system may have different variations and names, but the essence is the same.

Backpack straps.

Backpack straps (3) should be fairly thick and soft on the inside. Webbing from one layer of foam will quickly crumple and begin to cut hard into the shoulders. The shape of the shoulder straps can be straight, crescent or S-shaped. Straight shoulder straps do not allow free movement of hands. The shoulder straps should be neither narrow nor too wide. For an average person, the optimal width is 6-7 cm, tapering towards the bottom. Fastening the straps must be strictly in height, even if backpack has a floating suspension (see above). The straps on top should fit snugly against the backpack and not wobble. Upper Straps Guy (2), pulling the upper part of the backpack to the back are required (they are almost always).

Chest strap.

Main function Chest Ties (4)- keeping the straps of the backpack at a certain distance from each other, preventing them from falling off the shoulders to the sides and fixing the backpack more reliably on the back. However, if backpack matched to the height correctly, you will not need it. But her disadvantage is very significant - it squeezes the chest when inhaling. As they say, not for everybody!

Backpack suspension belt.

Availability of a convenient waist belt ("Waist", weight belt) (7) a backpack is a must. Waist belt takes up to 50% of the backpack's weight from the shoulders and back and redistributes it to the hips, and also prevents the backpack from fidgeting on your back. Belt should be with a soft lining on the inside, rather wide (at least 10 cm), but not too wide, so as not to interfere with walking and, most importantly, when putting on a backpack, fall on the waist, and not on the bottom. Belt should tighten tightly on you when wearing a backpack on one T-shirt. Convenient when side braces extend from the waist belt - this helps to better adjust belt both in summer for a T-shirt and for thick winter clothes. without a waist belt are now practically not produced (except, perhaps, for the cheapest models). On the belt NECESSARILY put buckle (8) type "Self-dumping" or "trident", which for safety reasons can be easily undone with one hand! Usually, buckles type "trident" are more fragile than "self-disposal". NOTE: belt buckle - the most frequently breaking element, sometimes they have to be changed several times a year. And if it breaks down during the hike and there is no replacement, there is little pleasant. That's why do not be lazy after buying a backpack, go to shop fittings and buy two or three of these buckles(they are very cheap in the city, but on a hike they are almost priceless) and put them in your backpack pocket - will not be superfluous!

Fastening the straps.

Very important method of attaching the straps to the bottom backpack... It is recommended when they are not attached at the corners at the bottom, but higher in the area of the waist belt through a special kerchief. In this case, the body coverage is better and the load distribution of the backpack is better.

Lumbar pillow.

Lumbar pillow (6) - useful thing- the hump on the backpack in the area of the waist belt, which does not allow the backpack to slide down, allows you to significantly relieve the straps and load the belt. Better when it is not made of foam rubber, but of the same foam.

Flaps and pockets.

The presence of a pocket in the valve(lid) of a backpack - required (more details about the advantages of the valve are described above). Put here compass, cape, knife, field diary, etc. The presence of a small pocket for documents inside the valve. But keep in mind: the valve is most sensitive to precipitation (during rain or sleet, the valve gets wet first and most), so when storing documents in the valve, do not be too lazy to wrap them in polyethylene. But the presence pockets on the sides and back of the backpack - for an amateur... Yes, it's comfortable, but there are also disadvantages: with heavily stuffed pockets, it is not convenient to put the backpack in the trunks, on the narrow third carriage shelves and get into public transport with it. In this case, detachable hinged pockets are convenient. Sometimes there are small pockets on the waist, where you can put keys, pocket money and other small things. However, don't forget that a lot of pockets means extra weight.

Loops, slings, rings, elastic bands, nets and other attachments on the outside of the backpack.

External suspension in the form of loops, slings, rings, etc. on the outer surface of the backpack, shoulder straps - a thing also for an amateur. As a rule, very convenient, but many do without them. Some people have them on their backpacks, but they don't use them. In fact they very functional- for them, you can attach rolled karemats to the backpack ( rugs ), awnings(especially when wet), ropes, mugs, cats, ice axes , carbines and other iron, etc. Moreover, they are easily accessible and do not tear backpack... To keep long items (such as a hammer) attached to the sides of the backpack from popping out, there are often support pockets underneath. The rings on the straps are convenient for carrying a camera, walkie-talkie, resting hands, for which they sometimes provide special hinges .

Lower compartment of the backpack.

Lower compartment("Bomb bay", "mouse hole") is actually not very functional. If the backpack is inserted in a circle karemat, then it is still impossible to use the lower "manhole" in the backpack. If there is no rug, then it is easy to pull out the right thing it is also difficult, and putting it in place is even more so. In addition, after removing things from the "bomb bay", the one who had previously stood well on the ground refuses to stand at all. In general, the thing is not for everybody.

Backpack side straps.

Availability side tie straps (5)- necessarily. They allow you to adjust the volume of the backpack 2 or more times and the backpack will never look like a bag, it will always keep its shape. However, they practically lose their meaning if inserted in a circle inside the backpack. karemat(tourist foam mat) - what diameter was pulled karemat, of this diameter will be backpack... Also side straps irreplaceable when transporting thin and long oversized items: ax, shovel, alpenstock, ski poles, yourself skis when walking on foot, etc. In this case, the straps are loosened, the necessary items are inserted under them and then tightened again.The shape and convenience of the backpack itself will not change, but you save your hands from unnecessary burden... When buying a backpack, choose so that the fastenings of the side ties are metal, while the plastic ones will break at home when you try to load backpack .

Pens on the backpack.

For the convenience of dressing backpack or loading it into transport must be strong pens at least two. One of them is usually located above the mount straps, and the other is on the opposite side. Pens can be on the sides.

Backpack volume:

Now you need to decide on the volume of the backpack itself... Volume travel backpacks measured in liters and ranges from 60 to 150. How to choose the right volume? If you buy too small backpack, it may happen that you have to hang some of the equipment outside or carry a small backpack ("kenguryatnik") on your chest, which will be very inconvenient or carry something in your hands, which is really bad. But it is also not worth buying too large (otherwise you will always find that to put in it and the backpack will be too heavy).

Usually, recommend using the following volumes: For schoolchildren - 60-70 liters. For girls - 80-100 liters... For men - 100-120 ... If it seems too big to you, it is worth remembering that it can always be pulled with straps (making 80 liters from a 120-liter backpack). It should also be taken into account that if you are used to wearing a karemat (tourist foam mat) inside the backpack, it will "eat up" about 5-10 liters of volume due to the backpack's incomplete correspondence with the cylinder shape.

Backpack weight.

Empty weight backpack depends on its type (soft or semi-tank), materials and the number of additional bells and whistles. Sometimes it can reach 3-4 kg! However, it will not be possible to buy a backpack less than 2.5 kg now. Avid tourists have Never unloading a set of items in a backpack (usually in pockets) - various tools, flashlights, candles, matches, compass, notebook, six volumes by Turgenev the notorious N.A.Z. and other... So it turns out that the backpack seems to be empty, but it already weighs ten kilograms ...

Backpack manufacturers.

The most perfect and thoughtful "Professional" backpack models are produced by foreign firms Tatonka, Ferrino, Salewa, LoweAlpine, Jack Wolfskin, Black diamond and many others. They are quite expensive, but if funds allow - buy, you will never regret! For most tourists, the backpacks relatively inexpensive firms Vaude (Germany ), Campus (Poland), as well as domestic firms producing backpacks using foreign patterns and from foreign materials - RedFox and some others. Out of pure Russian manufacturers company backpacks have proven themselves very well Bask, also not cheap, but not inferior in quality to foreign models. Also, in any region there are at least one or two firms of "local importance" producing backpacks of fairly decent quality. In any case, do not skimp on yourself! Good travel backpack not cheap, but it will last you more than one year!

Conventionally, backpacks can be divided into the following groups: expeditionary hiking

Side strap The presence of special straps, allowing, if necessary, to reduce the volume of the backpack. Most often, these straps are side ties to adjust the thickness of the backpack. Since when using a backpack, there is a large load on the ties, you need to make sure that they are strong and that the seams are reliable. Currently, the backpack is a special bag for carrying goods. How the backpack is arranged A standard backpack consists of a loading chamber, the actual backpack Suspension system There is little that can be interesting to say about the loading chamber. Receptacle,

First of all, as soon as it comes to the weight of the backpack, it is not customary to name any specific values expressed in kilograms. We are all quite different from each other in our build and physical capabilities, so that the same weight can be perceived by us in completely different ways. For example, for a fragile fifty-kilogram girl, 25 kg will be just a huge load, while for a hefty one-hundred-kilogram man this is a fairly low weight with which he can comfortably

The choice of a backpack is a delicate, complex and responsible business, because a backpack should become your best friend, not your worst enemy. Weight distribution There are two basic principles for packing a backpack. The first one is fairly obvious - heavy things should be placed as close to the back as possible. This will help the backpack sway less while walking. But, most importantly, the closer its center of mass is to your spine, the more natural and straight position your body maintains, less tiredness while walking. The second principle is that the heaviest things should be located at the height of your shoulder blades. At first sight

Most often, these straps are side ties to adjust the thickness of the backpack. The possibility of adjustment increases the convenience of using the product: with the correct placement of the load, things can be stowed neatly and tightly, not allowing them to dangle freely in the backpack. In tourist backpacks, the volume can be changed using the top flap and side pockets (see "Adjustable flap", "Detachable pockets"). Side pockets Backpack has external side pockets. Side pockets can be made of mesh or dense fabric. As a rule, they are elastic and do not have fasteners; the load in them is fixed with an elastic band. Less often, pockets are closed with a zipper or by means of a flap. These pockets are convenient for storing items that need quick access, such as a bottle of drinking water. Back ventilation The backpack has a system of forced back ventilation. This function is especially important for many hours hiking trips while playing sports or cycling. This can be an additional frame with a mesh on the back or soft anatomical pillows with air channels. See also "Ventilated shoulder straps". Weight (from 0.2 to 6.4 kg) Weight of the backpack excluding cargo. The lighter the backpack, the more comfortable it is to travel or play sports with it. It is believed that the optimal weight of a bulky travel backpack does not exceed 3 kg. Drinking system outlet Presence of a special compartment for placing a drinking system in a backpack. The drinking system is a soft sealed container for water. A long tube with a valve at the end is attached to the container, and the end of the tube is attached to the shoulder strap of the backpack. Most often, the backpack has a special pocket for the reservoir, a hole for the tube and its attachment. The drinking system itself is sold separately. life, and it affects the health of the student.

Choosing the right, high-quality backpack is not worth saving.

Pediatricians advise to buy orthopedic backpacks so as not to create back problems for the child, or if problems are present, so as not to aggravate them.

In addition, the student needs to be taught how to properly carry a backpack, using both straps.

And it will not be superfluous to do some relaxing back exercises that will help the student after coming home from school.

What to choose: satchel, backpack and briefcase?

Backpack for first grader

The satchel, according to GOST, is a leather haberdashery product with shoulder straps, which is designed to carry the things the student needs (textbooks, notebooks and writing utensils) on the back. The backpack should be worn on both shoulders (use both straps) and not on one shoulder to avoid spinal problems.

The knapsack is recommended for small and middle-aged children; books and notebooks will not be wrinkled if something happens to him, for example, he falls, and he also will not let the contents get wet during precipitation.

It is also worth noting that the design of the knapsack does not allow carrying it on one shoulder, which means that the student will wear it correctly.

School student's briefcase

But a briefcase, according to GOST, is a product that does not have shoulder straps (shoulder straps), and is carried in the hand. Experts do not recommend schoolchildren to carry schoolbags, as regularly carrying weights in the hand increases the risk of developing scoliosis and other problems associated with the spine.

School bag

A backpack differs from a knapsack in that its body is soft, while the knapsack is hard.

The backpack is more suitable for teenagers and students. In this case, you should pay attention to the presence of a solid back.

For a child, it is still better to choose a knapsack, since its body will protect not only the contents, but also the child. Thanks to the firm back, the severity of the backpack will not put too much pressure on the back.

How to put things in a satchel or backpack

* Heavier objects are best placed closer to the back, while lighter objects are better placed in the front.

* Both sides of the backpack (left and right) must be equally loaded.

You can find a mixture of a backpack and a knapsack on the market today. This item is lighter than a knapsack, but it boasts an interesting design. And if the product has not only a solid back, but also a hard bottom, then such a product will suit not only a high school student, but also a student of elementary grades.

Choosing the right satchel?

Knapsack material

1. A good satchel is made using lightweight material equipped with water-repellent and frost-resistant properties.

2. Seams and fastenings are very important. A good knapsack has double stitching and NO glue.

3. All elements, including plastic, must be in such a shape that the child does not get scratched. Chips or burrs should not be visible anywhere.

4. Synthetic fabrics such as nylon or polyester are more waterproof than natural fabrics. A satchel made from natural fabrics is more suitable for older children, who drop the satchel or backpack less or may spill something on it.

5. Choose a backpack that has more zippers and fewer velcro fasteners, as zippers are more durable.

Backpack weight

An empty knapsack should not weigh more than 1 kg, but preferably 600-800 g. In primary grades, the weight of textbooks, notebooks and other school supplies is about 2 kg, and in high school even more so it is very important that the backpack is as light as possible.

Here is how much a satchel with textbooks, notebooks and writing utensils should weigh according to hygienic standards:

  • 1st and 2nd class - up to 1.5 kg
  • 3rd and 4th class - up to 2.5 kg
  • 5 and 6 class - up to 3 kg
  • 7 and 8 class - up to 3.5 kg
  • Grades 9-11 - no more than 4.5 kg for boys, and no more than 3.5 kg for girls.

Knapsack size

1. Too large a satchel on a young schoolchild not only looks funny, but also is not very useful for his back. Try it on your child before purchasing. The upper edge of the satchel should not rest against the back of the child's head, and the lower edge should not press on the lower back.

2. It is also worth paying attention to whether the satchel is skewed. It is advisable to fill it with something and ask the child to try on the knapsack. Take a close look - the satchel should sit level and comfortable.

Knapsack shape

1. The satchel should be rigid, which is good for the back. In addition, such a knapsack will not allow notebooks and textbooks to wrinkle.

2. Also, the shape of the knapsack should be such that during precipitation, liquid does not accumulate on its upper part.

3. The width of the knapsack should not exceed the width of the student's shoulders.

4. The top edge of the satchel should not be higher than the shoulders and the bottom edge should be below the hips.

5. Locks and zippers should be made in such a way that the child can easily open and close them.

6. The most reliable backpack should be equipped with a waterproof bottom, or a bottom with legs, so that it can be safely placed even on snowy ground or in a puddle.

* Do not buy a satchel to grow!

Orthopedic backpacks for first graders

Back of the satchel

1. The back should be moderately rigid and orthopedic. It should have pads that follow the curves of the spine so that the weight is evenly distributed over the child's back.

2. To keep the back from sweating, it is desirable that the backpack has a soft mesh lining.

* For a teenager, it is better to choose a backpack that has stiff ribs.

3. It is even better if a special roller is installed in the lower part of the back of the backpack, which plays the role of a lumbar support. He will take on the main load.

Comfortable shoulder straps

1. It is desirable that the straps have the same lining with mesh as the back of the satchel, so that the heavy satchel is easier to carry and the straps do not cut into the shoulders.

2. The straps must be adjusted. It is even better if the adjusting buckles are not only at the bottom, but also at the top of the backpack, so that the backpack fits as tightly as possible to the back.

3. The straps should not be stretched, so that once adjusted their length, the satchel can be constantly worn in the correct position.

4. The best width of the straps is about 5 cm.

5. In September, the child will be in a shirt, a little later in a light jacket, and in winter in a down jacket. It is advisable (but not necessary) to find a knapsack that has adjustable not only length, but also the location of the straps.

Reflectors on the satchel

These details are incredibly important. Moreover, they should be not only on the backpack, but also on the child's clothes.

Moreover, reflective details should be on everyone's clothes, as they help drivers see pedestrians better at night.

According to GOST, any schoolbag must contain elements from materials of contrasting colors, as well as parts with reflective elements.

* The brighter the backpack, the easier it is to notice, the most noticeable colors for the driver are yellow and orange.

* Pay attention to the position of the reflectors - they should be on all sides of the backpack and on the shoulder straps.

* Some backpacks use reflective threads and locks.

* Fluorescent details will also be useful on the backpack, which will make the student more noticeable during the day.

How to choose a backpack for a first grader?

Backpack pockets and compartments

The backpack should have enough pockets and compartments to accommodate not only notebooks, textbooks and pencil cases, but also a bottle of water, a telephone, and even a small container of food.

Backpack design

Choose the right satchel that your child will like first. The satchel should not only be of high quality and reliable, but also like the one who will wear it, so as not to develop complexes in the child.

Ideally, you need to combine safety and design, since the former is important for health, and the latter for self-esteem.

Knapsack with wheels

A knapsack with wheels can make life a little easier for those who have a constantly heavy knapsack. Children do not have to carry a lot of weight on their shoulders, but just carry it on wheels, which is much easier.

However, there are two drawbacks: such a satchel is difficult to lift up the stairs and difficult to move along the snow-covered streets.

The main thing is to choose a backpack that is not too large and not very heavy, so that the child can easily move and lift it.

It is also worth paying attention to how noisy the wheels are, and how much they can handle a lot of weight.

The handle is also very important for these backpacks. It should slide out easily and be strong enough.

Backpack care

Do not wash the satchel in washing machine as this could damage some of its parts, including reflective elements and the back and shoulder pads.

You can immerse the pack in warm water and use washing powder and a hard brush (or abrasive sponge) just to clean the required areas.

And you are ready to discover new horizons for yourself. And the first step is to get yourself a travel backpack. But how to choose the right backpack for you? What is the difference between urban and outdoor, men's and women's backpacks? What should you pay attention to when choosing? - Read about it below.

The main types of travel backpacks

A tourist backpack differs from an urban one in one important detail - a hip belt. Thanks to him, 70-80% of the weight of the backpack is transferred to the pelvic region and legs. This belt is the main "secret" of hiking: after all, carrying a weight of up to 20 kg on one shoulders for several days is very tiring and it is possible to earn yourself back problems. Remember: almost the entire mass of the backpack is kept on the belt, and the shoulders only hold it by the straps so that it does not fall back.

Backpacks for hiking and travel are roughly divided into two types of designs: soft and frame.

Frameless hiking backpacks - pros and cons

Soft (or frameless)- these are backpacks with a soft back. By the presence of zip ties, additional pockets and accessories, they are not inferior to frame backpacks. In such models, usually, instead of a frame, a mat (rug) is used.

Pros of frameless backpacks:

  • compactness: roll up to minimum sizes;
  • lightness: weigh two or more times less (in comparison with frame backpacks);
  • relatively low cost;

Minuses:

  • do not keep their shape - you need the ability to properly pack the backpack;
  • limited adjustment of the load between the shoulders and the belt;
  • discomfort with a large weight of the backpack;
  • limiting large models.

Output: to an inexperienced tourist, a model with a soft frame, most likely, will not seem entirely convenient to use. For the first few years, it is better to go to the mountains with a hard backpack.

Frame backpacks - pros and cons

Frame (rigid)- backpacks with a frame system. In models with a small volume, a plastic plate can act as a frame, and in models designed for a larger weight, a system of arcs made of light-alloy metals (for example, duralumin) serves as a frame.

Pros of Hard Backpacks:

  • full adjustment of load distribution;
  • allows you to comfortably carry a large weight for a long time;
  • large assortment - a choice of models for every taste and budget;
  • the ability to properly pack a backpack is not critical;

Minuses:

  • the relatively large weight of the backpack. On average 2.5-4 kg;
  • medium and high cost;
  • an empty backpack cannot be rolled up compactly

Output: despite some disadvantages of these backpacks, this the best choice for the novice tourist. Therefore, we will dwell on them in more detail.

Differences between women's and men's backpack

The main differences are the shape and volume of the backpack.

It is known that the female body has different proportions than the male. And that's not to mention individual characteristics each person. Backpacks marked "women" take these nuances into account and offer models that are anatomically better suited to women.

The desirable volume of a woman's backpack is from 50 to 75 liters, for a man's - from 75 to 100. In addition, the weight carried by women should be 20-30% lighter in comparison with a man. I saw such instructors who loaded fragile girls along with themselves with the words: “Why? She also eats and sleeps in the tent. So let him carry it! " Therefore, I appeal to the male half: let's also observe tolerance in the mountains and take care of our lovely ladies ☺

What to look for when choosing a backpack

Optimal volume of a backpack for travel

As one seasoned tourist put it: “First you choose your backpack, and then the rest of the equipment that fits into it. But not the other way around. " Therefore, the first thing you need to decide on is the displacement (internal volume) of the backpack.

20-35 liters- backpack for day trips or climbing. Everything you need will fit here: a raincoat, a thermos, sandwiches, a first aid kit and personal items. Models with such a displacement are suitable, for example, for trips to the Carpathians, when you live in a comfortable house and go out for a walk in the nearby mountains. In addition, they are convenient to use in the city or when traveling.

35-50 liters- storm or mountaineering backpacks. Considering the cost, such backpacks are usually used by freeriders, climbers or rescuers. Ordinary people may find it useful during their holidays at a ski resort.

There are even more in this displacement range. simple models... For a novice tourist, this will be the best choice. Designed for 2-3 day light hikes.

50-100 liters- a full-fledged hiking backpack. It will fit everything you need for a hike from 4 to 20 days: warm clothes, a tent, a sleeping bag, boilers and food. And if something does not fit, then there are special puffs outside that can be used to fasten a pad, tent or other things. On the other hand, in this case, you should carefully review its contents: maybe you accidentally grabbed something unnecessary?

100-150 liters- expeditionary backpacks. This capacity is suitable for difficult sports trips or expeditions lasting from 20 days to several months. With such a backpack - 140 liters - I went through 4 years and I can say with confidence: you need to try very hard to fill it to the brim. Even if it turned out to be done, I do not guarantee that it will be possible to carry such a weight for a long time.

Back design of hiking backpacks

Standard backrest is a simple construction of two metal rods with possible bends. The cost of such backpacks is usually quite adequate.

Orthopedic back- a more complex system of rigid elements, which allows you to relieve the load from the spine as much as possible. Not every tourist can afford such a pleasure.

Easel back- a rigid frame with a suspension, on which a bag item or other bulk cargo is attached. Used for expeditionary purposes. Such "mammoths" came across to my eyes extremely rarely.

Most modern backpacks(except for easel), the numerous ties and slings located on the shoulder straps and hip belt allow you to correctly adjust the backrest. The “correctness” of the adjustment can be suggested to you by the store's consultant, or already by the Couloir's guide on the hike.

Backpack weight for hiking

The weight of frameless backpacks is from 1 to 1.5 kg, and frameless - from 2 to 4 kg.

The most optimal weight is 2.5 kg. Although there are models - for example, the German manufacturer Deuter - that weigh almost a kilogram more, but benefit from the quality of materials and usability.

Pockets and additional functions

When choosing a backpack for hiking and travel Special attention you need to pay attention to the presence of pockets and other additional chips that can greatly simplify your life in the mountains.

Valve- the upper retainer, which gives access to the main compartment. This element is necessary to protect things from moisture and reduce the volume of the backpack.

Additional pockets- a small, but very handy detail that will certainly help you out on a hike more than once. They are located on the main cylinder of the backpack, in the valve and in the hip belt. Their main function is quick access to a map, compass, water and other small accessories.

In addition, models with a division into two sections or access to the lower section of the backpack are popular: for easy removal of a sleeping bag or boilers.

Compression slings- are located on the sides of the main section. With their help, the volume of the backpack is reduced and equipment (trekking poles, karemat or tent) is additionally fixed.

External mounts and hinges- used for fastening climbing equipment: carbines, ice ax, crampons and ropes. These backpacks are called "assault" or "mountaineering". Some models are equipped with special mounts for skis, snowboards and avalanche equipment.

Radial backpack- in some models “made in Ukraine” - Fram Equipment and Turbat - the valve or outer pocket can be detached and can act as a small backpack for radial exits to neighboring peaks. I have not seen this from foreign manufacturers.

Rain-cover- well-known brands are not lazy to add rain protection to their backpack. It is a backpack-sized piece of water-repellent material that can be easily hidden in a small pocket. It is less common in budget models, but you must definitely buy it!

Fittings

When choosing a backpack, it is very important to pay attention to the quality of zippers, fastexes (fasteners) and retainers. Indeed, on a hike, there is not always time and mood to replace broken parts.

High-quality fittings are manufactured by the Japanese brand YKK. If the above details are labeled "YKK", then they will serve you for a very long time.

How to try on and buy a backpack in the store

The choice of a backpack for hiking has been made, now it remains to purchase it. The ideal purchase option is to test a specific model on a hike. By borrowing a backpack from friends or taking it, in a few days in the mountains it will be reliably known how much it suits you. And when you return to the city, you just buy the same model in the store.

Otherwise - the backpack did not fit or did not go on a hike - take a tourist friend with you and together choose what you need. If you don't have such friends, it doesn't matter! After all, most of the sales assistants in tourist shops are people who have been to the mountains more than once. They will help you choose the best way considering your height and body proportions.

Of course, the forums have a lot of information about the selection of a backpack and a description different models... Choosing a successful backpack remotely takes a lot of time and is very difficult to do.

Examples of good models, the cost of a travel backpack

The assortment of backpacks in tourist equipment stores is very large. Therefore, you will find enough information about them. The price range is from 2000 to 8000 UAH (100-400 USD).

Unfortunately, foreign manufacturers (Deuter, Osprey, Black Diamond, Pinguin) peg the price of a product to the dollar, and not everyone can shell out more than $ 200 for a good backpack. But there are several Ukrainian brands that have proven themselves well, and their price tags do not cause a shock to the buyer:

Terra incognita- development takes place in Ukraine, and production - in China. Snow-Tech Backpack - Has been helping me with cycling, snowboarding and short hikes for two years. Price range - from 1000 to 5000 UAH.

Fram Equipment- Kiev brand of ultralight equipment. The frameless Osh backpack is used by my more experienced travel companions. I myself have been going with him for the third month. Prices for a small range of backpacks - from 300 to 1700 UAH.

Beskid- backpacks by Alexander Volkov. You will receive a variety of choice and quality of materials for quite fair money, and the simplicity of the design will allow a novice tourist to easily operate these backpacks. The Terskey 110 + 30 model has served me for almost 5 years and is perfectly preserved even after difficult sports trips. The price range is from 1000 to 2000 UAH.

A few more domestic manufacturers - Travel Extreme, Commandor and Turbat - I often saw while hiking with other tourists. Their quality and ease of use are not worse than the above. Prices - from 600 to 2300 UAH.

Summary

Take your time choosing a backpack for hiking and traveling! The more comfortable the backpack is, the more comfortable you will feel during the hike and will get the most out of it.

And finally: if you are the person who is constantly looking for something new for yourself, then no one forbids you to have several backpacks for different types of tourism and travel;)

Personal experience - choosing a tourist backpack

Of course, general information is useful, but personal experience in using different models is much more interesting and useful. We'll share ours, you share yours - this will help those who are choosing a backpack for a hike.

Personal experience: Taras Pozdny, founder and guide of Couloir

Hello everyone! To be honest, I carried a lot of backpacks. I'm not sure if I will remember all the models and names, but I will try. Go.

Self-made backpack- since I am a hereditary tourist, I began to go hiking with a self-made anatomical backpack. In fact, he was not much different from the current frameless. But he was different: with hard straps that rubbed his shoulders very much - he had to put a jacket under them, and the absence of a belt. Yes, we carried all the considerable weight only on our shoulders. And a very big thank you to my parents that there was such a backpack, and not a "bun" or "easel" - it was just hell.

Personal assessment: 7 out of 10 - adjusted for that time.

Travel Extreme Scout 65 and 80- this was the next step. Frameless, lightweight and comfortable backpack. Once they were made very solid and even now there are a couple of "those" scouts in good condition. There are also some new ones bought for rental. So, in terms of strength, they cannot be compared with the old ones. Everything was reliable in the old ones, and only after a year or two of active use, fastexes and zippers could start flying. In the new ones, everything is much worse: the fabric is softer - it quickly diverges at the seams on the straps and sides, the zippers are very cheap - it sticks right away, the "dogs" are even worse - they fly already in the first trip, the fastexes are also bad. In general, there are many more minuses than pluses. On the plus side - price, light weight, compactness, convenient pockets. When buying such a backpack, stock up on a repair kit right away. And before they were reliable.

Personal assessment: 6 out of 10. Suitable for uncomplicated, rare hikes.

I grew up and the scout was already small. Since I was almost always the son of an instructor (father), I had to carry the largest backpack. We considered the 90-liter as a female version, but we ourselves went with 110 and 130. A good volume, which will fit everything and even a volleyball. And sometimes football. Previously, the ball was a must-have trekking accessory, at the level of the cauldron. But back to the backpack. It was well-sewn and did not tear. Already 10 years have passed since those times and these backpacks still serve us. Sometimes fastexes fly, but this is not critical. High quality, inexpensive and a little awkward - you need to be able to pack your backpack well. As for me, 110 liters is almost always overkill. Worth buying at 90.

Personal assessment: 8 out of 10 is a good model of a frameless backpack.

Travel Extreme Denali 90.

To be honest, I don’t remember exactly whether it was my first frame backpack or not. Let's start with Denali, since I worn out three of them, at least. These are relatively new backpacks from Travel Extreme, frame and not very expensive. In general, the first couple of trips do not behave badly - they sit well and comfortably. But by the third, and maybe even earlier, the filler in the straps is caked and they begin to press. Also, by this moment all fastexes and locks usually fly. Proven as good backpacks for one or two hikes. But who buys a backpack for two hikes? On the downside: poor-quality sewing (threads stick out from everywhere), the worst zippers and "dogs" that I have seen, very uncomfortable side pockets, frankly shitty fastexes, stupid valve tightening system, substandard materials. The pluses include a small cost and that's it.

Personal assessment: 6 out of 10. In fact, if you go hiking 1-2 times a year, you can take it. But it's better to buy the Commander. This is such a difficult task - the choice of a backpack for hiking in the mountains.

Commandor Backpack Caravan 90 - Old Version?

I don’t remember exactly the model, but now I haven’t found exactly that on the site. Perhaps it was only on this backpack that I realized what high-quality fastexes and zippers are. Everything was done soundly, firmly and reliably. Not a single problem for several trips, but I already took it second-hand on a tip from Lesha - thanks. The only negative is the complete lack of pockets. I'm not used to that. Everything else is a plus: good straps and a belt, which after 5 years and a bunch of hikes did not go astray (for example, Travel Extreme), very high-quality fastexes, zippers and locks. Thick and sturdy fabric. In general, there were no problems.

Personal assessment- 7.5 out of 10. Understated due to lack of pockets.

Commandor Sherpa 100

Another Commander's backpack. But I liked it much less than the previous one. Mainly because it is so big and the hip belt was great for me. I just could not tighten it as I would like, and because of this, the adjustment of the backpack got confused. Zippers, fastexes, fabric - for your money, everything is at a very good level. Perhaps one of the best models of large budget backpacks. I recommend looking at the smaller Caravan 90 and Expert 75. I have not worn them, but I am sure they will be good.

Personal assessment: 7 out of 10 - turned out to be great for me.

Vaude Terkum 75 + 10

On this moment he travels with me everywhere. By far the best backpack I've ever worn. For some reason, it was Vauda that I preferred last time to Deuter, and did not regret it. Although this time I'll take a Deuter. So, the main advantage of Terkum is its incredible convenience. With him I walked around Norway, carrying 42 kg (only there were 26 kg of food, such a trip came out: 18 days, some girls and me. And you can't overload them too much). And at the same time, my back endured this torment normally. With any backpack from the past, this would be almost unrealistic. For two years now, I have been carrying him with me everywhere - which means that more than 180 days a year he is in business. And so far everything is fine, although, of course, it wears out a little. I really like that there are two zippers along the entire backpack, through which you can easily get to any part without repacking all the things. The only drawback is the small volume. Now my tent is always on the side, and it's not a fact that all things will fit in. Therefore, for the last two years I have been going around with two backpacks. There is another 30 liters of Osprey ahead. And I like this scheme, because from a small one you can get a fotik, a map, a gps and other necessary things at any time.

Personal assessment: 9 out of 10. I really like the Vaude firm.

Personal experience: Maxim Khomyakevich, guide of the club "Couloir"

Terskey 110 + 30- "Volkovskiy" backpack, which was purchased in 2012. He survived numerous campaigns in the Carpathians, Crimea and Turkey.

Pros:

  • simplicity of design, adjustment and use;
  • large displacement allows you to accommodate bulky items and equipment;
  • low cost;

Minuses:

  • with a load of more than 20 kg presses on the shoulders;
  • inconvenience of use with low weight;
  • low-quality fittings (model of 2012), which after a couple of years began to break down.

Conclusion: a good backpack for novice tourists, but I advise you to buy a model with a smaller displacement: 90-110 liters.

Snow-Tech 30- “Terra” model of 2014 I constantly use during radial exits, cycling and snowboarding.

Pros:

  • quality of materials and accessories;
  • additional external mounts for skis, snowboards, additional things and special equipment;
  • ease of adjustment and ventilated back;

Minuses:

    the hip belt does not unfasten;

Conclusion: for your money and possibilities of use - an excellent backpack. I only regret that I did not buy a model with a volume of 40 liters.
