In my opinion, there are two things you shouldn't skimp on: a backpack and shoes. Because you can walk in one of them all day, and carry the other on your beloved back for an equally long time. About shoes another time, but today about how to choose a backpack for a hike. Remember, there are no universal backpacks! I myself already have several backpacks of different sizes for different purposes.

How to choose a backpack

Backpack volume

First you need to decide backpack volume, measured in liters, and according to its purpose. The longer your hike, the larger the volume of your backpack should be. But, for example, for climbing, they also use small backpacks, since the main things remain in the climbing camp. So the recommended backpack volume:

- For small outings into nature, for example, for a weekend, a backpack of 40-50 liters or so is suitable.
- For hiking you need to look for something in the region of 70-100 liters. Women, as a rule, travel with a backpack of no more than 40-70 liters.
- For water and ski trips— 90-120 liters. There's a lot more stuff here.

It makes sense to borrow someone's backpack and try to fill it, or even better, go on a hike with it. After this, you can immediately understand a lot for yourself. And how to choose a backpack, and what a backpack is for a hike. There is a saying that no matter how big a backpack is, it is always completely filled. That is, the smaller your backpack, the less unnecessary things you will have to carry, but you need to know when to stop.

Design of the right backpacks

All modern designs are approximately the same, and when choosing a backpack for a hike, you should be guided by the mandatory presence of adjustment of the back of the backpack according to the person’s height and the presence of a waist belt. It is best to try on a loaded backpack, since the convenience of an empty one is difficult to evaluate. If the backpack does not have the above items, then it is not the right backpack, have mercy on your back and shoulders. The suspension system that suits you is the key to proper load distribution.

Important nuances

  • The lap belt should support the full weight when adjusted correctly. It should be slightly below the waist, on the protruding hip bones.
  • The straps should be soft, but elastic, and not too thin.
  • The distance between the straps should correspond to the width of your shoulders - the straps should not slide down.
  • There must be metal or plastic armor in the back of the backpack. Usually they are inside the back and are not visible.

Other points you should pay attention to when choosing a backpack for hiking:

— A quick-release flap is better than one sewn to the backpack.
— Having additional pockets is convenient, but for example, side pockets can get in the way if you push through the thicket.
— The side straps should be of such length that you can put a rug or a small tent there.
— Almost all backpacks have a lower compartment with separate access, and this is very convenient for dividing the internal space.
— The presence of a rain cover (protective cover from rain) is good.
— The weight of a modern backpack is about 2.5 kg; if it weighs much more, then it’s better to look further.
— The fabric of the backpack should be strong, and the seams should be well stitched. It’s good when the bottom is made of cordura fabric.

Budget and company

Chances are your first backpack won't be your last. And after several trips, you will know exactly which one you need. camping backpack. When hiking, there is usually someone to compare with. Therefore, it is not always worth buying famous brands right away and overpaying.

You can buy an inexpensive Russian backpack, for example from Novatour or Equipment; something cheaper is unlikely to last long. If your budget allows, then you can take a closer look at companies such as Deuter and Tatonka, they make really good and strong backpacks. True, they are a bit heavy (2-3 kg), there are a lot of bells and whistles. And if you are going on serious and long hikes (several weeks), then look for something lighter (lightweight versions weigh about 1 kg), in this case every gram is saved. Of the branded and lightweight ones, I like Thule.

There are a lot of companies producing backpacks, and you can choose and compare. Or, if there is a Decathlon in your city, you can order from it. There are quite a few inexpensive and good models from the same Quecha. For your first backpack and first hike, you will definitely have enough choice in this store.

Life hack - when ordering online on the Decathlon website, but through the cashback service, there will be a 2.5-5% refund for all products. If you don’t know yet, they have delivery, so you can order everything to your home. By the way, there are not only Decathlon, but also a bunch of other stores.

If it seems to you that buying a backpack for the first time is difficult, then remember, you are not buying it for life and when you purchase a second one, you will definitely be able to take into account all the nuances that turned out to be important to you. What I mean is that you have to try and get yours personal experience, nothing can replace it.

The evolution of my backpacks

I've been using hiking backpacks for probably 10 years now, if not more. And they are constantly changing. Some were worn out, some just wanted to be replaced. After all, if the backpack looks good outwardly, it’s not a problem to sell it.

Any tourist, hunter or fisherman knows how important it is to choose the right backpack and how carefully you need to approach the choice of this means of moving your things, because this determines the number of things that you can afford to take on your next outing. This is the most important purchase of all equipment. Comfortable backpack It makes carrying loads much easier and keeps your back and lower back healthy. experienced a long stage of evolution before appearing in modern form. The first examples were canvas duffel bags bags with straps, better known as "koloboks", later began to produce prototypes of modern designs. After them came frame “ermak”, and only then, the market was flooded anatomical backpacks .

Dividing backpacks by type:

The back of the backpack.

Back of the backpack may have different thicknesses depending on the number and material of inserts. The purpose of such a design- protection of the back from a carelessly packed backpack, often - removal of sweat and a more even distribution of the load on the back. Ideally, for this purpose, there should be vertical wide elastic pads in the back. Sometimes it happens instead solid insert made of foam (this is worse!) or no padding at all, and the back consists only of backpack fabric(this option is highly not recommended!). On many modern models semi-station backpacks(“anatomists”) use the so-called floating suspension or a floating strap fastening system on the back. This allows you to customize backpack according to a specific figure. IT IS VERY COMFORTABLE! The most common option is to secure it with double Velcro to a series of parallel horizontal slings. Each manufacturer's system may have different variations and names, but the essence is the same.

Backpack straps.

Backpack straps (3) should be quite thick and soft on the inside. Straps from one layer of foam they will quickly wrinkle and begin to cut heavily into the shoulders. The shape of the straps can be straight, crescent or S-shaped. Straight straps do not allow you to move your arms freely. The straps should be neither narrow nor too wide. For the average person, the optimal width is 6-7 cm, tapering towards the bottom. Attaching the straps must be strictly according to height, even if backpack has a floating suspension (see above). The straps on top should fit snugly to the backpack and not wobble. Top guys for shoulder straps (2), pulling the upper part of the backpack towards the back are mandatory (almost always happen).

Chest strap.

Main function Chest straps (4)- keeping the backpack straps at a certain distance from each other, preventing them from falling off the shoulders to the sides and more securely fixing the backpack on the back. However, if backpack If you choose the right size for your height, you won’t need it. But it has a very significant drawback - it squeezes chest when inhaling. As they say, not for everyone!

Backpack suspension belt.

Availability of convenient waist belt (“belt”, weight belt) (7) a backpack is a mandatory requirement. Belt belt takes up to 50% of the weight of the backpack from the shoulders and back and redistributes it to the hips, and also prevents the backpack from fidgeting on your back. Belt It should be with soft padding on the inside, quite wide (at least 10 cm), but not too wide so as not to interfere with walking and, most importantly, when putting on the backpack, it should rest on the waist, and not on the butt. Belt should fit tightly on you when wearing a backpack over one T-shirt. It’s convenient when there are side pulls from the waist belt - this helps to better adjust belt both in the summer on a T-shirt and on a thick one winter clothes. They are now almost never produced without a waist belt (except perhaps for the cheapest models). On the belt NECESSARILY is put buckle (8) type "self-reset" or "trident", which can be easily unfastened with one hand for safety reasons! Usually, buckles the “trident” type is more fragile than the “self-reset” type. NOTE: waist belt buckle - most frequently broken element, sometimes they have to be changed several times a year. And if it breaks during a hike and there is no replacement, it won’t be pleasant. That's why don't be lazy after purchasing a backpack, go to shop accessories and buy two or three of these buckles(they are very cheap in the city, but practically priceless on a hike) and put them in your backpack pocket - will not be superfluous!

Attaching the straps.

Very important method of attaching straps to the bottom backpack. It is recommended that they are attached not at the corners at the bottom, but higher in the area of the waist belt through a special scarf. In this case, there is better coverage of the torso and better distribution of the load of the backpack.

Lumbar pillow.

Lumbar pillow (6)- a useful thing - a hump on the backpack in the area of the waist belt, which prevents the backpack from sliding down, allows you to significantly relieve the straps and load the belt. It’s better when it’s made not from foam rubber, but from the same foam.

Flaps and pockets.

Presence of a pocket in the valve(lid) of the backpack - a must (more details about the advantages of the valve are described above). Placed here compass, cape, knife, field diary, etc. It is very convenient to have a small pocket for documents inside the valve. But keep in mind: the valve is the most sensitive to precipitation (during rain or wet snow, the valve gets wet first and the most), so when storing documents in the valve, do not be lazy to wrap them in polyethylene. But the availability pockets on the sides and back of the backpack - not for everyone. Yes, it's comfortable, but it also has its drawbacks: with heavily stuffed pockets, the backpack is not convenient to put in trunks, on narrow third shelves of cars and to fit into public transport with it. In this case, hanging detachable pockets are convenient. Sometimes there are small pockets on the waist where you can put keys, pocket money and other small items. However, do not forget that many pockets mean additional weight.

Loops, slings, rings, elastic bands, nets and other accessories on the outside of the backpack.

External suspension in the form of loops, slings, rings, etc. on the outer surface of the backpack, the straps - this is also not an acquired taste. As a rule, they are very convenient, but many people do without them. Some people have them on their backpacks, but they don’t use them. In fact they very functional- you can use them to attach rolled up mattresses to your backpack ( rugs ), awnings(especially when they are wet), ropes, mugs, cats, ice axes , carbines And other iron, etc. At the same time, they are easily accessible and do not tear backpack. To prevent long objects (for example, a hammer) attached to the sides of the backpack from jumping out, there are often support pockets at the bottom. The rings on the straps are convenient for carrying a camera, walkie-talkie, resting your hands, for which they sometimes provide special loops .

Bottom compartment of the backpack.

Lower compartment(“bomb bay”, “mouse hole”) is actually not very functional. If the backpack is inserted in a circle karemat, then it is still impossible to use the lower “hole” into the backpack. If there is no mat, it is easy to pull it out the right thing is also difficult, and putting it in place is even more difficult. In addition, after removing the item from the “bomb bay”, the previously well-standing item on the ground completely refuses to stand. In general, the thing is not for everyone.

Side straps of the backpack.

Availability side tie straps (5)- Necessarily. They allow you to adjust the volume of the backpack by 2 or more times and the backpack will never look like a bag, it will always keep its shape. However, they practically lose their meaning if they are inserted in a circle inside the backpack karemat(tourist foam mat) - what diameter was used? karemat, this will be the diameter backpack. Also side straps indispensable when transporting thin and long oversized objects: axe, shovel, alpenstock, ski poles, skis when crossing on foot, etc. In this case, the straps are loosened, the necessary items are inserted under them and then tightened again. The shape and convenience of the backpack itself will not change, but you relieve your hands of excess weight. When buying a backpack, choose so that the fasteners for the side ties are metal; plastic ones will break at home when you try to load them. backpack .

Pens on the backpack.

For ease of dressing backpack or loading it into transport must be strong pens at least two. One of them is usually located above the mount straps, and the other is on the opposite side. Pens may be on the sides.

Backpack volume:

Now you need to decide on the volume of the backpack itself.. Volume tourist backpacks measured in liters and ranges from 60 to 150. How to choose the right volume? If you buy too small backpack, it may happen that you will have to hang some of the equipment outside or carry a small backpack (“kangaroo bag”) on your chest, which will be very inconvenient, or drag something in your hands, which is completely bad. But you shouldn’t buy too big either (otherwise you will always find something to put in it and the backpack will be too heavy).

Usually, recommend using the following volumes: For schoolchildren - 60-70 liters. For girls - 80-100 liters. For men - 100-120 . If it seems too big to you, it’s worth remembering that you can always tighten it with straps (making a 120-liter backpack into 80 liters). It should also be taken into account that if you are used to wearing a karemat (tourist foam mat) inside a backpack, it will “eat up” about 5-10 liters of volume due to the backpack not fully matching the shape of the cylinder.

Backpack weight.

Empty weight backpack depends on its type (soft or semi-easel), materials and the number of additional bells and whistles. Sometimes it can reach 3-4 kg! However, it is also impossible to buy a backpack less than 2.5 kg now. Avid tourists have "never unloaded" a set of items in a backpack (usually in pockets) - various tools, flashlights, candles, matches, compass, notebook, six volumes of Turgenev the notorious N.A.Z. And other. So it turns out that the backpack seems to be empty, but already weighs ten kilograms...

Manufacturers of backpacks.

The most advanced and thoughtful "professional" backpack models are produced by foreign companies Tatonka, Ferrino, Salewa, LoweAlpine, Jack Wolfskin, Black Diamond and many others. They are quite expensive, but if you have the means, buy them, you will never regret it! For most tourists they are quite suitable backpacks relatively inexpensive companies Vaude (Germany ), Campus (Poland), as well as domestic companies producing backpacks based on foreign patterns and from foreign materials - RedFox and some others. From pure Russian manufacturers The company's backpacks have proven themselves very well Bask, are also not cheap, but the quality is not inferior to foreign models. Also, in any region there is at least one or two “local” companies that produce backpacks of fairly decent quality. In any case, don’t skimp on yourself! Good tourist backpack not cheap, but will last you many years!

Packing and adjusting a backpack Every day we are surrounded by a noisy city, built up with the same type of houses, between which hundreds of cars drive in a continuous stream. In those backpacks where removable metal strips, so-called armor, are used as a frame, it is possible to model the shape of the back. The back height is set once when purchasing the backpack and then remains unchanged throughout its service life. At least as long as it belongs to the same person. The correct back length is determined as follows. Put on the backpack and fasten the waist belt so that the upper part of its wings rests on the crests of the pelvic bones. The backpack has been an integral part of our lives for a very long time. This is connected, first of all, of course, with the fact that its practicality and convenience are truly undeniable. In fact, what could be more practical than an item that can fit literally everything you need while traveling? There is nothing more suitable for manually carrying luggage than a simple and unpretentious backpack. The German word backpack, which in the original means a shoulder bag, came into the Russian language.

A backpack is a constant companion of any traveler. Everyone uses backpacks everywhere - in the city, on a picnic, on a tourist trip, on climbs, on hikes. Backpacks were invented a long time ago and have undergone significant changes throughout their history. The vast scope of application of this type of equipment has given rise to a huge variety of backpacks of various designs and purposes. Conventionally, backpacks can be divided into the following groups: expeditionary hiking backpacks

Side tie The presence of special straps that allow, if necessary, to reduce the volume of the backpack. Most often, such belts are side ties to adjust the thickness of the backpack. Since when using a backpack, a large load is placed on the ties, you need to make sure that they are strong and the seams are secure. Sometimes, instead of belts, a zipper with an additional tab sewn underneath is used. By unzipping the zipper, you can also increase the thickness of the backpack. Opportunity

Backpack is a German word that means a shoulder bag. The first backpacks are direct descendants of army packs, which were used in all European armies in the nineteenth century. Currently, a backpack is a special bag for carrying cargo. How a backpack works A standard backpack consists of a loading chamber, the backpack itself, a suspension system. There is little interesting to say about the loading chamber. container,

First of all, when it comes to the weight of a backpack, it is not customary to name any specific values expressed in kilograms. We are all quite different from each other in our build and physical capabilities, so that the same weight can be perceived by us in completely different ways. For example, for a fragile fifty-kilogram girl, 25 kg will be simply a huge load, while for a hefty one-hundred-kilogram man this is a fairly small weight with which he can comfortably

Choosing a backpack is a delicate, complex and responsible matter, because the backpack should be yours best friend, and not your worst enemy. Since there is no such thing as a universal backpack, first we will try to understand hiking backpacks, i.e. those who travel a significant part of the journey on the shoulders of their owners. The first step is to decide on the volume of the future backpack. The first mistake is a backpack that is too small. Alas, a sleeping bag, a rug and... that’s it, nothing else fits Second

Weight distribution There are two basic principles for packing a backpack. The first one is quite obvious - heavy things should be located as close to the back as possible. This way the backpack will sway less while walking. But, most importantly, the closer its center of mass is to your spine, the more natural and straight your body maintains, less tired while walking. The second principle is that the heaviest things should be located at the height of your shoulder blades. At first sight

Most often, such belts are side ties to adjust the thickness of the backpack. The ability to adjust increases the ease of use of the product: with the correct placement of the load, things can be packed neatly and tightly, preventing them from dangling loosely in the backpack. For travel backpacks, the volume can be changed using the top flap and side pockets (see “Adjustable flap”, “Detachable pockets”). Side pockets The backpack has external side pockets. Side pockets can be made of mesh or thick fabric. As a rule, they are elastic and do not have fasteners; the load is secured in them with an elastic band. Less commonly, pockets are closed with a zipper or a flap. These pockets are convenient for storing things that need quick access, such as a bottle of drinking water. Back ventilation The backpack has a forced back ventilation system. This function is especially important when working for many hours hiking trips, while playing sports or cycling. This can be an additional frame with mesh on the back or soft anatomical pillows with air channels. See also "Ventilated straps". Weight (from 0.2 to 6.4 kg) The weight of the backpack excluding cargo. The lighter the backpack, the more comfortable it is to travel or play sports with it. It is believed that the optimal weight of a bulky tourist backpack does not exceed 3 kg. Conclusion of the drinking system The presence of a special compartment for placing a drinking system in the backpack. The drinking system is a soft, sealed container for water. And you are ready to discover new horizons for yourself. And the first thing you need to do is buy yourself a backpack. But how to choose the right backpack? What is the difference between urban and hiking, men's and women's backpacks? What should you pay attention to when choosing? - Read about this below.

Main types of travel backpacks

A tourist backpack differs from a city backpack in one important detail - the hip belt. Thanks to it, 70-80% of the weight of the backpack is transferred to the pelvic area and legs. This belt is the main “secret” of hiking: after all, carrying a weight of up to 20 kg on one shoulders for several days is very tiring and can lead to back problems. Remember: almost the entire weight of the backpack is held on the belt, and your shoulders only hold it by the straps so that it does not fall back.

Backpacks for hiking and traveling, roughly speaking, are divided into two types of designs: soft and frame.

Frameless backpacks for hiking - pros and cons

Soft (or frameless)- These are backpacks with a soft back. In terms of the presence of ties, additional pockets and accessories, they are not inferior to frame backpacks. In such models, a mat (rug) is usually used instead of a frame.

Pros of frameless backpacks:

  • compactness: rolls up to minimum sizes;
  • lightness: they weigh two or more times less (compared to frame backpacks);
  • relatively low cost;

Minuses:

  • do not keep their shape - you need to know how to pack a backpack correctly;
  • limited load adjustment between shoulders and waist;
  • discomfort due to the large weight of the backpack;
  • limitation of large volume models.

Conclusion: An inexperienced tourist will most likely find a model with a soft frame not very convenient to use. For the first few years, it is better to go to the mountains with a hard backpack.

Frame backpacks - pros and cons

Frame (rigid)- backpacks with a frame system. In models with a small volume, a plastic plate can act as a frame, and in models designed for greater weight, the role of a frame is played by a system of arcs made of light alloy metals (for example, duralumin).

Pros of hard backpacks:

  • full adjustment of load distribution;
  • allows you to comfortably carry heavy weight for a long time;
  • large assortment - a choice of models for every taste and budget;
  • the ability to pack a backpack correctly is not critical;

Minuses:

  • relatively heavy weight of the backpack. On average 2.5-4 kg;
  • medium and high cost;
  • empty backpack it won't be possible to roll it compactly

Conclusion: despite some disadvantages of these backpacks, this the best choice for the novice tourist. Therefore, let's look at them in more detail.

Differences between women's and men's backpacks

The main differences are the shape and volume of the backpack.

It is known that the female body has different proportions than the male. And that's not to mention individual characteristics each person. Backpacks marked “women” take these nuances into account and offer models that are anatomically better suited specifically for women.

The desired volume of a women's backpack is from 50 to 75 liters, a man's - from 75 to 100. In addition, the weight that women carry should be 20-30% lighter compared to a man. I have seen instructors who loaded fragile girls along with them with the words: “What? She also eats and sleeps in a tent. So let him carry it!” Therefore, I appeal to the male half: let’s also observe tolerance in the mountains and take care of our lovely ladies ☺

What to look for when choosing a backpack

Optimal backpack capacity for travel

As one experienced hiker said: “First you choose a backpack, and then the rest of the equipment that fits into it. But not the other way around." Therefore, the first thing you need to decide is the displacement (internal volume) of the backpack.

20-35 liters- a backpack for one-day hikes or climbs. Everything you need will fit here: raincoat, thermos, sandwiches, first aid kit and personal items. Models with this displacement are suitable, for example, for trips to the Carpathians, when you live in a comfortable house and go for a walk in the nearby mountains. In addition, they are convenient to use in the city or while traveling.

35-50 liters- storm or mountaineering backpacks. Considering the cost, such backpacks are usually used by freeriders, climbers or rescuers. To ordinary people it may come in handy while relaxing at a ski resort.

In this displacement range there are more simple models. For a novice tourist, this will be the best choice. Designed for 2-3 day light hikes.

50-100 liters- a full-fledged hiking backpack. It will fit everything you need for a hike from 4 to 20 days: warm clothes, a tent, a sleeping bag, boilers and food. And if something doesn’t fit, then there are special ties on the outside that can be used to secure a mattress, tent or other things. On the other hand, in this case you should carefully reconsider its contents: maybe you accidentally grabbed something extra?

100-150 liters- expedition backpacks. This displacement is suitable for complex sports trips or expeditions lasting from 20 days to several months. I walked with such a backpack - 140 liters - for 4 years and I can say with confidence: you need to try very hard to fill it to the brim. Even if you manage to do this, I do not guarantee that you will be able to carry such weight for a long time.

Back design of hiking backpacks

Standard backrest- This is a simple design of two metal rods with possible bends. The cost of such backpacks is usually quite reasonable.

Orthopedic back- a more complex system of rigid elements, which allows you to remove the load from the spine as much as possible. Not every tourist can afford such a pleasure.

Easel back- a rigid frame with a suspension on which a bag or other bulky cargo is attached. Used for expeditionary purposes. Such “mammoths” came across my eyes extremely rarely.

In the majority modern backpacks(except for easel ones), numerous ties and slings located on the shoulder straps and hip belt allow you to correctly adjust the backrest. A store consultant or a Couloir guide on a hike can tell you the “correctness” of the adjustment.

Hiking backpack weight

The weight of frameless backpacks is from 1 to 1.5 kg, and frame backpacks are from 2 to 4 kg.

The most optimal weight is 2.5 kg. Although there are models - for example, from the German manufacturer Deuter - that weigh almost a kilogram more, they benefit in quality of materials and ease of use.

Pockets and additional features

When choosing a backpack for hiking and traveling Special attention You need to pay attention to the presence of pockets and other additional features that can greatly simplify your life in the mountains.

Valve- top lock that gives access to the main compartment. This element is necessary to protect things from moisture and reduce the volume of the backpack.

Additional pockets- a small but very convenient detail that will definitely help you out more than once on a hike. They are located on the main cylinder of the backpack, in the valve and in the hip belt. Their main function is quick access to a map, compass, water and other small accessories.

In addition, models with division into two sections or access to the lower section of the backpack are popular: for convenient removal of a sleeping bag or boilers.

Compression straps- are located on the sides of the main department. With their help, the volume of the backpack is reduced and equipment (trekking poles, sleeping mat or tent) is additionally secured.

External fastenings and hinges- used for fastening climbing equipment: carabiners, ice axes, crampons and ropes. Such backpacks are called “assault” or “climbing” backpacks. Some models are equipped with special mounts for skis, snowboards and avalanche equipment.

Radial backpack- in some models “made in Ukraine” - Fram Equipment and Turbat - the flap or outer pocket is detachable and can serve as a small backpack for radial trips to neighboring peaks. I have not seen this from foreign manufacturers.

Rain-cover- famous brands are not lazy to add rain protection to their backpack. It is a piece of water-repellent material the size of a backpack, which can easily be hidden in a small pocket. It is less common in budget models, but you should definitely buy it!

Accessories

When choosing a backpack, it is very important to pay attention to the quality of zippers, fasteners (clasps) and fasteners. After all, on a hike you don’t always have the time and mood to replace broken parts.

High-quality fittings are produced by the Japanese brand YKK. If the above parts are marked “YKK”, then they will serve you for a very long time.

How to properly try on and buy a backpack in a store

The choice of backpack for hiking has been made, now all that remains is to purchase it. The ideal purchase option is to check a specific model on a hike. By borrowing a backpack from friends or taking it, within a few days in the mountains you will know for sure how suitable it is for you. And when you return to the city, you simply buy the same model in the store.

Otherwise, the backpack doesn’t fit or you haven’t been on a hike - take a tourist friend with you and together choose what you need. If you don’t have such friends, it doesn’t matter! After all, most sales assistants in tourist stores are people who have been to the mountains more than once. They will help you choose the best option, taking into account your height and body proportions.

Of course, on the forums there is a lot of information about choosing a backpack and a description different models. Selecting a backpack successfully remotely takes a lot of time and is very difficult to do.

Examples of good models, cost of a travel backpack

Travel equipment stores have a very wide range of backpacks. Therefore, you will find enough information about them. Price range - from 2000 to 8000 UAH (100-400 dollars).

Unfortunately, foreign manufacturers (Deuter, Osprey, Black Diamond, Pinguin) tie the price of goods to the dollar and not everyone can shell out more than 200 dollars for a good backpack. But there are several Ukrainian brands that have proven themselves well, and their price tags do not shock the buyer:

Terra Incognita- development takes place in Ukraine, and production takes place in China. The Snow-Tech backpack has been helping me for two years while cycling, snowboarding and on small hikes. Price range - from 1000 to 5000 UAH.

Fram Equipment- Kyiv brand of ultralight equipment. My more experienced fellow hikers use the Osh frameless backpack. I myself have been going with him for the 3rd month. Prices for a small assortment of backpacks range from 300 to 1700 UAH.

Beskid- backpacks by Alexander Volkov. You will get a variety of choice and quality of materials for quite fair money, and the simplicity of the design will allow a novice tourist to easily use these backpacks. The Terskey 110+30 model served me for almost 5 years and was perfectly preserved even after difficult sports trips. Price range - from 1000 to 2000 UAH.

I often saw several other domestic manufacturers - Travel Extreme, Commandor and Turbat - while hiking with other tourists. Their quality and ease of use are no worse than those mentioned above. Prices - from 600 to 2300 UAH.

Summary

Don't rush into choosing a backpack for hiking and traveling! The more comfortable the backpack, the more comfortable you will feel on your hike and get the most out of it.

And finally: if you are the kind of person who is constantly looking for something new for yourself, then no one forbids you to have several backpacks for different types of tourism and travel;)

Hi all! To be honest, I carried a lot of backpacks. I'm not sure I'll remember all the models and names, but I'll try. Go.

Self-made backpack- since I am a hereditary tourist, I started going on hikes with a self-sewn anatomical backpack. In fact, it was not much different from the current frameless ones. But it was different: it had hard straps that really rubbed your shoulders - you had to put a jacket under them, and the lack of a belt. Yes, we carried the entire considerable load only on our shoulders. And a very big thank you to my parents for having such a backpack, and not a “kolobok” or “easel one” - it was just hell.

Personal assessment: 7 out of 10 - adjusted for that time.

Travel Extreme Scout 65 and 80- this was the next step. Frameless, lightweight and comfortable backpack. Once upon a time they were made very well and even now there are a couple of “those” scouts in good condition. There are also several new ones purchased for rental. So, in terms of strength, they cannot be compared with the old ones. In the old ones everything was reliable and only after a year or two of active use could the fastex and zippers start to fly. In the new ones, everything is much worse: the fabric is more delicate - it quickly comes apart at the seams on the straps and sides, the zippers are very cheap - they jam immediately, the “dogs” are even worse - they fly already on the first trip, the fastex is also bad. In general, there are much more minuses than pluses. Pros: price, light weight, compactness, convenient pockets. When buying such a backpack, immediately stock up on a repair kit. And before they were reliable.

Personal assessment: 6 out of 10. Suitable for simple, rare hikes.

I was growing up and the scout had already become small. Since I was almost always the son of an instructor (father), I had to carry the largest backpack. We considered the 90-liter one to be a women's option, but we ourselves went with 110 and 130. A good volume that can fit everything, even a volleyball. And sometimes football. Previously, the ball was a mandatory hiking accessory, at the level of the boiler. But let's get back to the backpack. It was sewn well and did not tear. 10 years have passed since those times and these backpacks are still serving us. Sometimes fastexes fly, but this is not critical. High-quality, inexpensive and a little awkward - you need to know how to put together a backpack well. As for me, 110 liters is almost always too much. Worth buying at 90.

Personal rating: 8 out of 10 - a good model of a frameless backpack.

Travel Extreme Denali 90.

To be honest, I don’t remember exactly whether it was my first frame backpack or not. Let's start with the Denali, since I've worn out at least three of them. These are relatively new backpacks from Travel Extreme, framed and not very expensive. In general, the first couple of trips do not behave badly - they sit well and comfortably. But by the third, and maybe earlier, the filler in the straps cakes and they begin to press. Also, by this moment all fastexes and locks usually fly. They have proven themselves to be good backpacks for one or two hikes. But who buys a backpack for two trips? On the downside: poor-quality tailoring (threads stick out everywhere), the worst zippers and “pawls” I’ve ever seen, very uncomfortable side pockets, downright shitty fastex, stupid valve tightening system, low-quality materials. The advantages include low cost and that's all.

Personal rating: 6 out of 10. In fact, if you go hiking 1-2 times a year, then you can take it. But it's better to buy Commander. This is such a difficult task - choosing a backpack for hiking in the mountains.

Backpack Commandor Caravan 90 - old version?

I don’t remember the exact model, and now I can’t find anything like it on the website. Perhaps, only on this backpack did I understand what high-quality fastex and zippers are. Everything was done well, firmly and reliably. Not a single problem over several trips, but I already bought it used on Lesha’s tip - thank you. The only negative is the complete lack of pockets. I'm not used to this. Everything else is a plus: good straps and a belt, which after 5 years and a bunch of hikes have not gone astray (like Travel Extreme), very high-quality fastex, zippers and locks. Thick and strong fabric. In general, there were no problems.

Personal assessment- 7.5 out of 10. Downgraded due to lack of pockets.

Commander Sherpa 100

Another Commander's backpack. But I liked it much less than the previous one. Mainly because it is very large and the hip belt was too big for me. I simply could not tighten it as much as I would have liked, and because of this, the adjustment of the backpack was also lost. Zippers, fastex, fabric - everything is at a very good level for the money. Perhaps one of best models large budget backpacks. For smaller volumes, I recommend looking at the Caravan 90 and Expert 75. I haven’t worn them, but I’m sure they will be good.

Personal rating: 7 out of 10 - turned out to be too big for me.

Vaude Terkum 75+10

On this moment he goes with me everywhere. Definitely the best of all the backpacks I've ever worn. For some reason, I preferred Vauda over Deuter last time, and I didn’t regret it. Although this time I'll take Deuter. So, the main advantage of Terkum is its incredible convenience. I walked around Norway with him, carrying 42 kg (only 26 kg of food, such a trip took 18 days, just the girls and me. And you can’t overload them either). And at the same time, my back endured these torments normally. With any backpack from the past, this would be almost impossible. It’s been two years now that I’ve been carrying it with me everywhere - which means that it’s in use more than 180 days a year. And so far everything is great, although, of course, it is wearing out a little. I really like that there are two zippers along the entire backpack, through which you can easily access any part without repacking all your things. The only negative is the small volume. Now my tent is always on the side and it’s not a fact that all my things will fit. That's why I've been walking around with two backpacks for the last two years. Osprey is still 30 liters ahead. And I like this scheme, because from a small one you can get a camera, map, GPS and other necessary things at any time.

Personal rating: 9 out of 10. In general, I really like the Waude company.

Personal experience: Maxim Khomyakevich, guide of the "Kuloir" club

Terskey 110+30- “Volkovsky” backpack, which was purchased in 2012. Survived numerous hikes in the Carpathians, Crimea and Turkey.

Pros:

  • ease of design, adjustment and use;
  • large displacement allows you to accommodate bulky items and equipment;
  • low cost;

Minuses:

  • with a load of more than 20 kg it puts pressure on the shoulders;
  • inconvenient to use with low weight;
  • low-quality fittings (2012 model), which began to break after a couple of years.

Conclusion: a good backpack for beginner tourists, but I advise you to buy a model with a smaller displacement: 90-110 liters.

Snow-Tech 30- I constantly use the 2014 “Terra” model during radial excursions, cycling and snowboarding.

Pros:

  • quality of materials and fittings;
  • additional external mounts for skis, snowboards, additional things and special equipment;
  • ease of adjustment and ventilated back;

Minuses:

    the hip belt cannot be unfastened;

Conclusion: for the money and the possibilities of use, this is an excellent backpack. My only regret is that I didn’t buy the 40 liter model.

Longtime backpack fan

Great interest in comfortable carry-on luggage in general and backpacks in particular appeared in 2007, when a permanent job like “digging from the fence until the evening” was replaced by freelancing and small business in its various manifestations. Implementation of the concept " always have your personal office with you“started with some discreet and flat HP backpack and an LG P300 laptop, aka “Zebra”.

A similar model, but older

This bundle pleased me with a large number of pockets and pockets - I managed to neatly put the external optical drive, drive, memory, flash drives, cables and other little things in their places. But the laptop's protection left much to be desired. The laptop was literally dangling in a large pocket made of thin fabric and without a lock, located inside the main compartment. No cushioning material in the bottom, no frame inserts, just a laptop bag.

Although, the LG P300 is a rather small and plump device, and this offset the weak physical protection of the backpack (designed up to 17-inch models), since there was a decent distance between the outer walls and the gadget and it did not move from side to side. But when in 2008 I decided to change the platform to OS X and switched to a 15-inch Unibody MacBook Pro, the question of replacing my backpack arose precisely because of the weak physical security of the laptop pocket. I became especially worried when, in the simplest situations, I touched the laptop against hard surfaces a couple of times.

The choice fell on Logitech Kinetik, the analogues of which still do not exist. This backpack served faithfully for three years, as was written about. Then began the vigorous search for the perfect carry-on luggage. Over ten years I have tested a couple of dozen different backpacks and slings and gained a lot of experience in choosing this kind of accessories, which I will share below.

Looking ahead, I will note that I have not yet found the ideal backpack for myself, and this is impossible in principle. After all, sooner or later even the most best thing You may get bored or your needs will change. Accordingly, the search process is endless, but exciting. And what more experience, the more interesting and suitable for the current realities of life things can be selected.

Before we begin, I would like to draw your attention to the links that will appear below. They lead to personal, very detailed reviews of carry-on luggage, which is given as an example of one or another important feature. With the help of this article, you can quickly determine your needs, and if you want to learn about some nuances in more detail, then click on the links.

What types of backpacks are there?

In short, small, medium, large, single-strap (aka slings) and classic with two straps. There are also specialized models with sections for photographic equipment, skateboard holders and other features. There are also modular options that can be clearly adapted to your needs. True, they look peculiar, since they take an example from military equipment, but indestructible, versatile and thought out to the smallest detail. Now let's look at all the points mentioned in more detail.

Selecting a backpack size

A reasonable size for a city backpack is up to 35 liters. Anything more is either for travel or for rare EDC maniacs who carry dozens of things with them every day for all occasions, even the zombie apocalypse.

To make the topic easier to understand, we will divide the models into large, medium and small:

  • 30-35 liters;
  • 23-28 liters;
  • up to 20 liters respectively.

Backpacks with a volume of 30-35 liters are the limit for use in the urban cycle, and they will be large. Such an accessory is justified if you often have to go on business trips lasting up to a week, and you don’t want to clutter your home with extra hand luggage.

The exception is models with compression straps, which allow you to tighten the backpack if it is half empty. An example of this is Wenger Large Volume Daypack. A couple of movements and the 30-liter hog turns into a very flat (though quite wide) urban “double-strap”.

One of my favorite backpacks, however, with its own nuances, such as the system of nested volumes and the absence of a frame (a kind of cool bag with a bunch of pockets). Read about everything in detail in the review:

Its anti-example is the 34-liter OGIO Renegade RSS. Even if you put only a laptop, a charger, a water bottle, a tablet and an external drive in it, the backpack will protrude outward with a huge hump.

On the other hand, it has a very well protected laptop compartment, has a frame and a really large number of pockets and compartments, all with reasonable placement. A chic accessory for a gadget lover and a truly convenient carry-on luggage for travel. I managed only with this backpack to go on a week-long business trip to two cities at once - to Moscow and to - dragging with me a laptop, a healthy camera, a tablet, a couple of smartphones, a change of clothes and other little things for the trip. Read more about this model here:

Another large backpack that has served me well in the city cycle and on business trips is Thule Crossover 32L Backpack(). Among its features are very strong, literally indestructible branded nylon, a protected compartment for glasses and delicate equipment, and an external pocket for large items such as fleece. But we’ll talk about the features of this kind of accessories a little later; for now, let’s return to the sizes.

Large backpacks in the vast majority of cases can easily accommodate a 17- or even 18-inch laptop, plus any reasonable amount of equipment for the road. There is still room for a bottle of water, a container of food, a set of laundry for 3-5 days and a change of clothes.

The most versatile models are medium-sized with a volume of 23-28 liters. In personal practice, they have proven themselves to be excellent both as a companion during short trips of a couple of days, and as a city backpack. I’m using it now, but it’s a very unusual thing that suits my personal needs well. True, when you change your laptop, you will also have to update your backpack, which I’ll talk about in the tricks section. Previously, he served faithfully for a couple of years Kata DR 467i, and it belongs to the same class of hand luggage.

In terms of equipment capacity, such accessories are comparable to big models, that is, it will fit a laptop, tablet, large SLR camera, all sorts of electronic small things, a bottle of water, a folding umbrella, and there will also be room for a fleece if it suddenly gets hot and you need to hide it. But you can’t take a lot of clothes or replacement shoes with you, so this backpack won’t be suitable for business trips of more than 2-3 days.

In addition, mid-range models often accommodate a maximum of 15-inch laptop. Although in most cases there is no need for more.

Small and flat backpacks with a capacity of up to 20 liters They are convenient because you don’t have to take them off even on public transport. Judging by personal practice, they do not bother people. But don't expect to stuff a 17-20 liter baby with a lot of stuff.

This kind of carry-on luggage is good for moving a laptop, tablet, wallet and some small items between home and office, but nothing more. Often you can’t even squeeze in a container of food, although a lot depends on the model.

I personally prefer compact slings, the features of which I will discuss in the next section. As for the classic double-strap ones, from unusual models I used it with the built-in proprietary GRID-IT elastic band system. Incredibly flat, high quality and stylish accessory, into which you can stuff a lot of things... except for a container with food, there’s nowhere to squeeze even a bottle of water. Yes, and there were questions about the straps, I’ll talk about that below.

The 19-liter model turned out to be a very pleasant and roomy model. When half-empty, it looks a little inconspicuous, but it is very light, comfortable on the straps, there are external mesh compartments for water bottles and all sorts of small items, a protected compartment for glasses, pockets for a laptop and tablet.

Their volume rarely exceeds 20 liters, and due to their unusual shape, in most cases they can accommodate everything that might be needed in the urban wilds, from a laptop and small electronics to a large camera, a bottle of water and a container of food. With the same Thule Crossover Sling mentioned above, I went on many business trips, where I carried a large mirrorless camera, a laptop and other useful things with me. One of the reasons is the ability to quickly slide the sling onto your chest and get the things you need without removing it:

And here an important question arises! Which sling should I take - left-sided or right-sided? I began my acquaintance with left-sided models (the strap hangs on the left shoulder) and, according to the first one, I was guided only by them. It was because of this that at one time I acquired a left-handed one.

By the way, modular paramilitary models from Maxpedition are chic and indestructible, but quite heavy, and with additional body kit they are also bulky. On the other hand, in the mentioned model, complemented by a Janus Extension Pocket built into the belt and a Coocoon Pouch pocket, it could carry an incredible amount of things. But I digress.

Returning to the question of straps, I will give a simple answer - don’t bother with it! It doesn’t matter which shoulder the strap is on - the left or the right - and it doesn’t matter which way the sling turns when you throw it over your chest. You get used to the new option literally within an hour of using another model. I checked this on my own experience when I was able to get the coveted Thule Crossover Sling second generation(). Suddenly it turned out to be right-handed, which scared me a little, but, again, I got used to it in just an hour. Although even this handsome man did not stay with me for long. His place was taken Dakine HUB Sling 15L(also right-handed), which I’ve been using for almost a year now and don’t plan to change yet, but that’s a separate big story, and we continue the banquet.

There is also such an interesting category as photo backpacks, but not professional monsters for three SLR cameras, a pair of howitzer-sized lenses and smaller caliber heels, and even a bunch of tripod straps. No, we are talking about the so-called Half Photo models like Crumpler Jackpack.

Their trick is that only part of the space is allocated for photographic equipment, usually at the bottom. Half of the volume on top can be filled with others useful things. And in the photo department, in addition to the camera, chargers, external storage devices, containers with food and other things fit perfectly. Thanks to their shape and configuration, they allow you to make the most efficient use of the entire working volume, keeping things organized and giving quick access to the necessary equipment, be it a laptop or a camera. By the way, the above-mentioned Kata DR 467i is from the same series. Read in detail about all the features of this type of product in the review below:

What's with the fabric?

Most backpacks are made from nylon. A good, strong and unpretentious material, but a lot depends on its density, weaving and impregnation.

Unnamed Chinese models for $10-20 are usually made of simply “nylon” without any frills. Often it is not very dense, with loose weaving (thin fabric that can be easily damaged if caught) and without protection from water. It won’t get wet instantly, but it’s better not to get caught in the rain with such a backpack. In general, the lion's share of the price of an accessory is its main fabric, plus accessories.

Branded models from famous brands are created based on more expensive options nylon with high density and, sometimes, with special impregnation.

For example, there is cordura(CORDURA) from INVISTA - a very dense fabric with a special weave, water-repellent impregnation and Teflon coating. It was originally created for the military, but is now often used in civilian carry-on luggage. A powerful and virtually indestructible material (all Maxpedition products are made from it), but quite rough to the touch. Not for everyone.

There is also the so-called ballistic nylon, created several decades ago by DuPont and also for the needs of the military. It is characterized by high density (1600D or more), good protection against water and is tear resistant. In the past, they even made bulletproof vests from it. An example of a backpack made of such fabric is this.

Interesting view nylon - ripstop. It is also highly tear resistant and waterproof, but unlike ballistic nylon it is quite thin and very light. This fabric is often used to make folding backpacks and bags, or inserts in places that experience high stress during use.

A worthy alternative to nylon - polyester. The fabric has a very fine weave, has water-repellent properties, and practically does not tear or get dirty. I also confidently recommend backpacks based on this material. A striking example is OGIO Renegade RSS.

In addition, it is worth mentioning nylon with thermoplastic polyurethane coating. It is completely waterproof, very strong, almost does not get dirty and is easy to clean from any dirt. The Spigen SGP New Coated Backpack and the favorite Dakine HUB Sling 15L are made from this material.

Leather backpacks I don’t understand - the material is heavy, not practical, and the layout of such luggage by department is usually very simple, like a “bag”. But it has status.

All sorts of exotic items made from thick cotton or waxed fabric are not for everyone. But usually such backpacks are not very practical either.

Features and chips that you need to pay great attention to when choosing

Let's talk about important details, from which the positive (or negative) experience of using the backpack is built.

Straps

The moment is very individual, because of which I highly recommend finding an opportunity to try it on before buying a backpack. For example, one of the reasons for selling Cocoon MCP3401 was the straps. I was ready to put up with its small volume and just for the sake of GRID-IT I would keep it in my personal collection and for use as my mood dictates.

The straps themselves are good, soft, ventilated, with comfortable strap fasteners, but they did not lie on my shoulders at all. It skews to the left, then to the right - it’s uncomfortable and inconvenient, no matter how I set them up and twist them.

But when I put on the Wenger Large Volume Daypack, it lay on my shoulders like my own, gently clasping them and gently pressing against my back. Same with the Thule Legend GoPro. No matter how I loaded these backpacks, my shoulders always felt comfortable and the weight was practically not felt.

In general, the moment is individual, but I formed it for myself a few rules quality straps, in addition to personal comfort, which can only be determined by directly testing the product:

  • Straps should be soft and ventilated(this can be a thin pillow or perforation). The softer they are, the higher the likelihood that they will fit well on your shoulders. Although in the same Thule Legend GoPro the straps are quite stiff, they clearly suited my shape.
  • There must be a chest strap. A very useful and underappreciated accessory that can significantly increase comfort when using a backpack, especially if it is heavy due to large quantity useful things inside. The chest strap relieves the shoulders a little and better secures the straps on them.
  • Reliable fasteners with the ability to quickly change the length of the belt. Previously, I tried to adjust the straps once and for all, but I quickly realized that in this case it was inconvenient to take the backpack on and off. I usually loosen the left strap as much as possible before I take off the accessory, and tighten it when I put it on. You don't have to twist your whole body in the process. It’s a problem if the clamps don’t hold the belt under the weight of a loaded backpack, but I’ve encountered this extremely rarely. However, check this point when purchasing, if possible. It is not necessary to load the backpack, just put it on and try to push the straps out with your hands.
  • Pockets on shoulder straps are usually useless, so ignore them. Yes - and good, no, well, okay. The problem is the bend on the shoulder - the pocket stretches and getting something out of it or putting it on the go becomes problematic.

Back

Everything is simple here - you definitely need ventilation, be it built-in pads made of special fabric or special grooves. If the back of the backpack is completely flat, then your back will be constantly wet.

The exception is slings. They usually do not fit very tightly to the back and the back does not sweat.

Accessories and other small items

It is highly desirable that the lightning be protected from rain. This could be a small valve above it or a special design of the zipper itself. Waterproof models are usually inside out and very thin. They are rubberized. If you see a simple zipper without any frills, be careful - it leaks easily in a downpour.

By the way, this is one of the rare disadvantages of the OGIO Renegade RSS backpack - its zippers are very strong, comfortable, large, but not at all protected from rain. And here is an example of a protected zipper in Crumpler Jackpack Half Photo:

Pay attention to how the zippers work, how convenient it is to unfasten them (waterproof ones are usually quite tight - this is normal), and whether there are rope straps that make life much easier.

Again, the difference between expensive products from well-known brands and nameless “Chinese” accessories is in the fittings. IN quality models Japanese YKK is often used (one of the best), reliable plastic in fastex and fasteners, and sometimes aluminum (in some Thule models).

Compression straps- also a useful addition, especially in large backpack models. They can also be used to secure the outside of a jacket if it is not needed at the moment (went to a warm supermarket, took off outerwear and freed his hands, fixing it on the backpack).

External compartments for water bottles save a huge amount of internal space in backpacks. You need to drink all the time if you want to feel good. There is no external pocket, you will have to use the main compartment, from where it is not very convenient to get water, and it is scary if it leaks. I also carry a compact umbrella in these departments; it happens that I hide all sorts of little things there, like paper napkins, folding string bag, etc.

Pen important and necessary, any - thick, thin, as long as it exists. As practice shows, carrying a backpack by the strap is extremely inconvenient, even if you just need to move it from place to place.

It is advisable that laptop pocket was designed as a separate space with its own zipper. As a last resort, you need a lock for this section so that the laptop inside does not dangle.

Ideal size and format

This question is individual for everyone, but I will share my ideal set at the moment.

Every day in the city I use a compact 15-liter Dakine sling - it’s almost invisible, it holds everything I need, including a laptop, a water bottle, small electronics, and there’s room for a food container and an umbrella. And in general, the volume is enough to leave home early in the morning and return late in the evening full and satisfied, without bombing cafes and restaurants during the day.

If you need to take a large camera and all your work equipment with you, or when you have a trip to another city for two days, then I use the Thule Legend GoPro. But, as mentioned above, it's time to change it.

The fact is that the 13-inch MacBook Pro no longer fits into the hydropack compartment, where the MacBook 12 in a case fit perfectly. That is, you have to hide it in a case in the main compartment, which takes up a lot of useful space there. I really like the protected front compartment, which fits the Sony A7i perfectly and from which you can quickly remove it on the go. And in general, in terms of the layout of the pockets and access to them, it is excellent, but all good things come to an end sooner or later.

I'm currently looking at Thule Paramount 24L Daypack and on eBags Professional Slim Laptop Backpack.

But I'm sure you understand the main idea. It’s good to have a compact backpack for the urban cycle and a medium or large format model for special occasions and trips. I've been trying for a long time to find the perfect and universal carry-on luggage - it doesn't exist. The proposed scheme with two backpacks is very close to ideal. All that remains is for everyone to choose something suitable for their personal needs. The moment is difficult, but interesting. Ah, these sweet pangs of choice.
