Answers to frequently asked questions

1.What is palm oil?

Palm oil is obtained from the fleshy part of the oil palm fruit. It contains palmitic acid. It is one of the cheapest vegetable oils in the world.

2. Is there any difference between palmitic acid in palm oil and palmitic acid in breast milk?

Palmitic acid from breast milk is well absorbed in the intestines of the infant. Palmitic acid from palm oil is split off in the intestines, combines with calcium and is excreted from the baby's body in the form of insoluble compounds.

3. Does palm oil have any effect on the child's well-being, growth and development?

Less fat and calcium are absorbed, which is necessary for the formation of the child's bones and teeth. In addition, insoluble calcium and palmitic acid compounds cause hard stools, which can contribute to constipation.

4. Why is a combination of vegetable oils needed?

Breast milk contains a variety of fatty acids. A combination of vegetable oils is needed to enrich the infant formula with them in the required proportion. Therefore, modern blends contain a combination of three to four oils.

5. Palm oil is legal, is it healthy?

Indeed, palm oil is not banned in Russia, but palm oil-free blends have a number of advantages. Clinical researches showed that the absence of palm oil promotes higher absorption and assimilation of calcium, higher bone mineralization, comfortable digestion and better tolerance to the mixture, the formation of soft stools.

6. Why do some manufacturers still use palm oil in their infant formula?

The use of palm oil in food products, including infant formula, is not prohibited in Russia. And manufacturers, due to cheap raw materials, are likely to reduce the cost of production and, as a result, the final cost of their mixtures.

Caring for a child is one of the main tasks of a woman and in order to be a truly good mother, one must have a great store of knowledge, and practical skills will come by themselves.

In our age of high technologies and an endless source of information, it is not so difficult to proudly live up to the status of an “exemplary mother”.

Similak infant formula

In order to ensure the baby's normal development, you need to take care of his nutrition, first of all. And even if there is no possibility of breastfeeding, then you will be able to choose the optimal artificial baby food.

One of the excellent options is the "Similak" mixture, which has acquired a decent reputation among all the proposals and is distinguished by its excellent production quality.

The most attractive hallmark is that there is no palm oil, GMOs and other harmful preservatives in the composition. The manufacturer made sure that any of the products in the line helps the baby to normalize the gastrointestinal tract, relieve constipation.

It should be noted that back in 2010 - 2012. it was difficult to find any reviews about the Similak infant formula and even more difficult to find such a product on the shelves of domestic stores. Many parents, who preferred this particular product, specially made orders, overpaying to suppliers. But now the situation has changed and Similak can be bought in any supermarket or pharmacy.

On the domestic market offer several power options for this manufacturer:

  1. "Similak-1" is suitable for babies up to six months old,
  2. "Similak-2" - for children under one year old,
  3. "Similak-3" - for children over one year old. The main difference between these three options is the different fat content (than older child, the manufacturer offers lower fat content). The price for "Similak" is slightly higher than for "Nutrilon" or "Nan".

One of the product categories is the line baby formula "Similak-Premium"... It is considered adapted, as close as possible in composition to breast milk, and it is assigned the "premium" class.

For the best development and intake of a balanced composition of fatty acids, vitamins and various minerals in the child's body, it is worth choosing this particular category of product. For all its richness with useful elements, "Similak-Premium" is easily absorbed and does not create discomfort for the baby.

There is also a gradation into three age categories and the price from this remains practically unchanged (about 350 rubles per package).

VIDEO ON TOPIC

A successful analogue is Nutrilon infant formula

Another worthy representative in the food industry baby food is the Nutricia company, which entered the market in 1997 and introduced its Nutrilon product. An interesting fact is that "Nutricia" in 2007 joined the group of companies "Danone".

The main plant for the production of the company "Nutricia" is located in the Netherlands, has numerous certificates of international quality standards. The manufacturer claims that the composition of all products has been developed and improved over thirty years of research, and it reduces intestinal diseases by 56% and respiratory tract by 37%.

The basic product in the line is infant formula "Nutrilon-1" designed for babies from birth to six months. Many pediatricians strongly recommend buying it, as it helps to strengthen the baby's immune system in the first months of life.

The company also offers a relatively new infant formula "Nutrilon-Premium", reviews of which have already found their place among mothers. Such food belongs to the class of "adapted" and is recommended for children who have a tendency to allergic reactions or have digestive problems.

In the composition, the presence of prebiotics of the IMMUNOFORTIS class is declared, and fatty acids, which are so necessary for the baby, are no exception. It is based on whey, which reduces the fat content and improves the ability to be absorbed, there are vegetable oils (including palm oil, but its value is optimal for the development of the child), fish oil, a numerous vitamin complex.

The packaging is presented in two options: 400 grams or 900 grams.

By numerous reviews of the Nutrilon-Premium infant formula we can say that the baby's problems with constipation will be solved, the mixture itself is convenient and quick to dilute with water, it is not very sweet and the price is quite reasonable. Also note the convenience of packaging in 900 grams, the ability to attach a spoon. Nutrilon-Premium eliminates allergies.

Infant Formula Unsted is the smart choice

The Nestlé company actively proposes to opt for the children's mixtures "Nestogen-1", which is designed for children up to six months. Three features are noted on the packaging: "good nutrition", "comfortable digestion" and "regular bowel movements."

As a result of the research, it was revealed that the claimed composition corresponds to reality, it is quickly diluted in water (for modern mothers, this criterion is also significant) and the mixture itself is quickly absorbed. But there are also disadvantages, which are expressed in uncomfortable soft packaging and the absence of probiotics.

Mixture of Unstogen "Happy Dreams"

According to reviews, the infant formula "Nestogen" is basic, so to speak, standard, primarily in terms of its composition. It is suitable for healthy children with no known allergic reactions. Sometimes, there are complaints about the reduced content of vitamin C in the composition, so it is often necessary to include it additionally. In terms of the composition of minerals useful for a child, "Unstogen" in the rating is at an average level, but within the normal range.

It should be borne in mind that the taste of this product is sweet and this is due to the fact that a large amount of molasses is found in the composition, and these are carbohydrates. In the future, the child may refuse unleavened food, it is not positive side... In this regard, there may be problems with caries, and excessive use of the product "Nestogen" leads to addiction.

As for the packaging, it is presented with a volume of 350 grams in a cardboard version. Long-term storage is not provided, the manufacturer himself recommends using the product within three weeks and no more.

Your baby will need about 100 grams of milk formula per day. The portion can be measured using the spoon that comes with the kit. The company "Nestlé" indicates that the presented measuring spoon is equal to 4.5 grams.

Despite all the pros and cons of the proposed product by Nestlé, it is the leader in sales in European countries and is given to children from the first days of life. Also "Nestogen" is a good bait, which is one of the most popular all over the world.

But it should be clearly understood that the choice of baby food is a purely individual thing and each parent is based only on the characteristics of his child. Don't lean on public opinion and if a certain option suits you, then do not be afraid to use it and do not change it due to any prejudices. The most important indicator is the health and proper development of the baby!

"Similak" mixtures are produced by the American company "Abbot", which develops and manufactures baby food since 1903. The name of the brand "Similak" comes from the English "similar to lactation", which literally means "like breastfeeding". The Abbot company owns the palm in the production of ready-made pasteurized breast milk substitutes for maternity hospitals. For the first time, our compatriots were able to get acquainted with the products of "Abbot" back in 1980, when the infant formula "Detolakt" - an analogue of "Similak", entered the market in the then USSR. Nowadays, the company never ceases to improve the formulation of its products, taking care not only of healthy children, but also creating special meals for premature and low birth weight babies.

Composition of baby food "Similak Premium"

It is produced in metal cans of 400 and 900 g and, depending on the age of the child, has the following division:

  • adapted infant formula "Similak Premium 1" from 0 months;
  • the subsequent adapted infant formula "Similak Premium 2" from 6 months;
  • dry milk drink "Similak Premium" 3 from twelve months;
  • baby milk "Similak Premium" 4 from eighteen months.

Produced in Ireland and Denmark. The country of origin can be found at the bottom of the product packaging under "Manufactured and Packaged". Many mothers, judging by the reviews on the Internet, believe that the quality of the mixtures, depending on the country of origin, at Similak is very different, while others do not notice much difference. If, nevertheless, after buying the next jar of baby food, the baby has an allergy or digestive problems, check where it was produced and packaged. You may have bought a product from another country before.

Squirrels

Adaptation of "Similak Premium" 1.2 in the protein component is due to the skillful combination of required quantities skim milk, whey protein concentrate and its hydrolyzate (split protein), and in Similak Premium products 3.4 skim milk and whey protein concentrate. An important indicator of the degree of adaptability of the mixture is the ratio of whey proteins and casein. From this point of view, "Similak Premium" does not look particularly advantageous against the background of its competitors. The minimum ratio of whey protein to casein for adapted mixtures according to TR TS033 / 2013 "On the safety of milk and dairy products" is 50/50, while for example it is 80/20, and in mature it is 60/40. In "Similak Premium" 1.2 the ratio of whey proteins and casein is 50/50, and in "Similak Premium" 3.4 it is not indicated at all even on the packaging and what it is, one can only guess.

To be fair, I must say that Abbot has tried to reduce the allergenicity of the initial adapted milk formula by introducing a whey protein hydrolyzate. It is known that splitting the protein molecules of cow's milk into small fragments can reduce the possibility of allergic reactions - the smaller the fragment, the lower the risk. The amino acid composition of cow's milk differs from breast milk and requires adjustment for some amino acids, therefore, "Similak Premium" 1,2 contains taurine and L tryptophan, which are essential amino acids. Simlak Premium 3.4 contains only taurine.

Fats Palm oil is absent in the products of the Similak brand, which is advertised and emphasized in every possible way. Numerous studies do confirm the negative effect of palm oil on the absorption of calcium by the infant's body and the formation of normal stool. Palm oil is rich in palmitic acid, which occupies the 1.3 position in triglycerides of fats. is able to further bind and remove calcium from the body, forming insoluble salts - palmitates, which make the child's stool harder, provoking constipation.

But is it only palm oil that is "to blame" for these consequences, and removing it solves the problem? Partly. In all vegetable oils there is palmitic acid, and it is located in the same way as in palm oil, just less of it. Only breast milk and pork fat do not contain palmitic acid at the 1,3 triglyceride position. Thus, vegetable oils in artificial baby food will never be completely equivalent to breast milk fat in unchanged form. Only the modification of vegetable oils can compare their molecules to the fat molecules of human milk. , but they are not cheap and "Similak" does not apply to them.

Palmitic acid is not an essential fatty acid, but breast milk contains quite a lot of it, and it is probably not accidental. Therefore, the question of its sufficient intake into the body of a child with breast milk substitute remains open. Perhaps that is why some vitamins are introduced into "Similak" in the form of palmitates - palmitic acid salts (ascorbyl palmitate (at the same time serves as an antioxidant), vitamin A palmitate). Most manufacturers prefer not to dwell on this topic, limiting themselves to a simple indication of the name of the vitamin on the package, without the form of its location.

It is interesting to note that Similak Premium does not contain fish oil as a source of polyunsaturated fatty acids. Instead, the manufacturer prefers the addition of Mortierella alpina monocellular mushroom oil (source of arachidonic acid) and microalgae oil Crypthecodinium cohnii (source of docosahexaenoic acid). Arachidonic and docosahexaenoic acids are essential for normal development vision and brain of the child. It is possible that this feature is simply due to the lack of need for other polyunsaturated fatty acids, as there are enough of them in the added vegetable oils. Only the manufacturer or laboratory study of the fatty acid composition of Similak Premium fat can say exactly how much the fat will differ from the fat of breast milk.

Carbohydrates

"Similak Premium" 1.2 among the digestible carbohydrates contains only lactose, and "Similak Premium" 3.4, in addition to lactose, also contains sucrose. Sucrose itself does not cause allergic reactions, but it can enhance the effect of food allergens and cause fermentation in the intestines. Therefore, in case of microflora disorders, a child's tendency to allergies and weak immunity, its excess in the diet is undesirable.

Among the carbohydrates indigestible by the body, prebiotics - galactooligosaccharides (GOS) - have been added to Similak Premium, which, entering the intestines unchanged, contribute to the normalization of microflora by nourishing it. In many other mixtures, fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS), which are also found in breast milk, are also administered simultaneously with GOS, but Similak Premium contains only one prebiotic.

Other components

"Similak Premium" contains several types of nucleotides, each of which is separately named in the composition. It is difficult to judge how great the diversity of nucleotides is in comparison with other mixtures, since most manufacturers do not bother with labeling their composition on the package. This and many other nuances characterize the Abbot company as the most open manufacturer for the consumer.

Nucleotides are structural links for the construction of RNA and DNA, they are also part of the compounds involved in the energy processes of the cell. Since their synthesis is limited in the body, it is important that nucleotides come from the outside, especially during the period of intensive growth of the body, which happens in infancy.

Similak Premium blends are enriched with two types of carotenoids: lutein and beta-carotene, which are powerful antioxidants. Lutein, along with other components, is included in the IQ Intelli-Pro complex, which is necessary for the development of the brain and vision and is not produced by the body. Beta-carotene is a precursor of vitamin A in the body, has immunostimulating and adaptogenic properties.

Important! Among all mixtures on the Russian market, only Similak Premium and Nutrilak contain lutein supplements.

Bifidobacterium lactis probiotics support healthy gut microflora, reduce the risk of acute diarrhea and reduce the incidence of respiratory infections. The effectiveness of probiotics in milk formula is slightly lower than in probiotic preparations, therefore, for a tangible effect, it is better to additionally give them in pure form.

Among the auxiliary ingredients are the antioxidant E 306 (tocopherols) and the emulsifier soy lecithin.

What is better "Similak Premium" 1 or "Similak" 1

  1. The first difference that immediately catches your eye is the different packaging. "Similak" is produced in cardboard boxes of 350 and 700 g.
  2. Noteworthy is the lower calorie content, which means less proteins, fats, carbohydrates, but this is not a reason to worry at all. Both are equally suitable for children and are approved for feeding toddlers.
  3. Similac Premium provides a lower metabolic burden on the kidneys due to its low osmolality.
  4. The ratio of whey proteins and casein is not indicated in the mixture "Similac", which is important for assessing the degree of adaptation. The only guideline is the term “adapted” on the packaging.
  5. There is much more arachidonic acid and prebiotics in Similac Premium.
  6. The composition of vitamins and minerals differs insignificantly.
  7. There is no beta carotene, lutein and probiotic additives in the Similak Premium blend.

The revealed differences affect the degree of adaptation, making "Similak Premium" more adapted to the body of a newborn baby and it can be called good enough nutrition for babies. This, of course, is reflected in the price, to which the metal can makes a certain share, but it is more likely to emphasize the premium quality.

Pros and cons of mixtures "Similak"

The quality of Similak baby food deserves a high assessment at a rather attractive price - about 260 rubles per cardboard packaging weighing 350 g. Of course, the big plus of these mixtures is the absence of palm oil. But do not think that having bought "Similak" you will never encounter this problem, since there are other reasons for the appearance of indigestion. You should be very careful about the Similac mixture 1, in which the ratio of whey proteins and casein is 50/50, while in breast milk at the initial stages it is 80/20, which makes it not too adapted for a newly born child. In addition, casein is often the cause of allergic reactions and its high content may not the best way affect the health of the baby. Similac contains many useful and varied additives, some of which (lutein) are practically not found in other mixtures. The manufacturer tries to be as open as possible to the consumer, carefully deciphering all the components of the composition. It is better for children prone to allergies to refuse from "Similak" 3.4 because of the presence of sucrose in the composition.

"Similak Hypoallergenic" 1.2

It is intended for children prone to allergic reactions, as well as for children (after consultation with a doctor) with cow's milk protein allergy at the stage of diet expansion and secondary lactase deficiency.

Instead of regular whey protein, the formula uses partially hydrolyzed whey protein, which is well absorbed by the body and causes fewer allergic reactions. Contains very little lactose 2 g in 1 liter of ready-mixed formula and therefore belongs to low-lactose, prescribed to children for artificial feeding with a secondary, complicated allergy to cow's milk protein. The composition includes prebiotics - galactooligosaccharides.

"Similac Antireflux"

Low-lactose mixture from birth against regurgitation and comfortable digestion. Can be used only with secondary lactase deficiency.

Due to the combination of whey and milk protein concentrates, as well as calcium caseinate, it has a low lactose content (2 g in 1 l ready meals), which makes it possible to use the mixture in case of secondary lactase deficiency, complicated. The antireflux effect is achieved due to the presence of rice starch, which, when it enters the stomach, creates a dense clot, which prevents the reverse ejection of food. Despite the dense consistency of the clot, food in this form is well digested and absorbed. Maltodextrin imparts a sweet taste to the product. Does not contain carotenoids - lutein and beta-carotene. "Similak Comfort" 1.2

Low-lactose mixture for children from birth with functional digestive disorders, manifested in the form of constipation, excessive gas formation.

Partially hydrolyzed whey protein is quickly and easily absorbed, and the reduced lactose content (2 g in 1 liter of ready-made food) prevents the development of excessive gas formation. At the same time, the food is quite sweet due to the addition of maltodextrin, so the baby will definitely like it. Probiotics Bifidobacterium lactis, reaching the large intestine, contribute to the normalization of microflora.

"Similak Low Lactose"

Low-lactose formula for children from birth who are bottle-fed with lactase deficiency and diarrhea. Not suitable for feeding children with galactosemia.

A low lactose content (2 g in 1 liter of ready-mixed formula) will help neutralize the symptoms that appear due to a lack of the lactase enzyme. It is not recommended to completely eliminate lactose from the diet, as it is important for the development of the brain and vision, as well as the formation of the correct intestinal microflora. The excluded lactose has been replaced with maltodextrin. The protein component is whey and milk protein concentrate, calcium caseinate, whey protein hydrolyzate. Does not contain carotenoids - lutein and beta-carotene.

Dry milk mixture Similak Premium 1 from 0 to 6 months

Overview of the mixture Similak Premium

Mixes Similak Premium can be bought in containers of different sizes - there are cans of 0.4 and 0.9 liters. Product range:

  • Similak 1 - a mixture for newborns, you can use it from birth up to six months;
  • Similak 2 - the mixture is used from 6 months;
  • Similak 3 - a product for feeding a baby from 12 months;
  • Similak 4 - milk for children from 1.5 years old.

The country of origin is indicated on the packaging, there can be two of them - Denmark or Ireland. This information is quite important because some consumers notice that the child reacts differently to products made in different countries.

Those who started feeding their baby with a Similak formula from Denmark, it is better to continue buying it, and vice versa.

Protein composition

So that the product does not cause digestive problems in the child, its composition is as close as possible to human milk. The first and second stages of the Similak Premium blend include prepared milk, whey proteins and specially split protein. Similac 3 and 4 - for older babies - include skim milk and concentrated whey protein.

It is important to distinguish a mixture from Denmark (pictured left) from a product from Ireland (right)

Determining how well a product is adapted for babies, experts pay attention to the proportion of casein and whey proteins. For example, in mature breast milk, whey proteins and casein are in a ratio of 60:40 (and in early milk 80:20). The Similak mix from 0 to 6 months shows a slightly different proportion - 50:50. If we talk about products for babies from six months, they do not indicate this ratio at all.

Fat composition

Most modern infant formula contains palm oil, which causes mixed reactions from parents. Studies have shown that the palmitic acid in this ingredient prevents the body from absorbing calcium properly. The manufacturer indicates that palm oil is not used in its products, which is an undoubted advantage.

Also the manufacturer instead of fish oil, which the child needs as polyunsaturated acids, used Mortierella alpina mushroom oil. It is known that a similar substance, arachidonic acid, is an essential component of human milk. Among the ingredients in this milk powder is Crypthecodinium cohni microalgae oil, also known as docosahexaenoic acid.

Carbohydrates

Sucrose, which is part of the Similac 3 mixture, can increase the child's allergies to other foods

In the listed types of Similak mixtures, prebiotics are present, which help to establish the growth of normal microflora in the intestines of the child. At the same time, they are not absorbed by the body, but serve as food for living microorganisms that live in the intestines. These products use galactooligosaccharides as prebiotics.

Additional ingredients

Similak infant formula also contains other components. We will list what you should pay attention to:

  1. Carotenoids, which are represented by lutein and beta-carotene. Both of these substances are classified as antioxidants. Lutein is essential for babies, it affects the formation of the brain and strengthens vision. This substance is not produced by the body, so it is extremely important to get it from the outside. Beta-carotene is converted into vitamin A, its task is to stimulate immunity, and help in the process of adaptation of the body to new food. This product is one of the few on the Russian market that is enriched with these antioxidants.
  2. Several types of nucleotides. These components are also a necessary element of the child's nutrition, they are particles of DNA and RNA chains, and affect the metabolic process of the body.
  3. Similak infant formula is enriched with probiotics represented by bifidobacteria. These microorganisms help the intestines work efficiently, they not only reduce the likelihood of diarrhea, but also strengthen the immune system. Due to the presence of prebiotics in the mixture, the work of probiotics becomes even more effective.
  4. The product contains a complex of tocopherols, which works as an antioxidant, as well as soy lecithin.
