Fashion is a fickle lady. However, if some clothing options are “passable,” then there are those that will forever go down in fashion history. The former are at the peak of popularity for a short time, but the latter become classics, to which fashion returns from time to time.

What is retro style?

Retro-style clothing are models that were fashionable in the last century from the 20s to the 90s. True, not all decades of the last century left a noticeable mark on the history of fashion. The most popular models are dresses in the style of the 20s, 50s and 60s.

Retro style is very popular among adult fashionistas. But children's fashion does not ignore it, so a dress for a girl in a retro style should definitely appear in your daughter's wardrobe. This outfit would be appropriate for a matinee, a family celebration or any other event. Looking at photos of models of children's dresses, you can always choose an option that is ideal for your girl.

Charleston style

A simple and uncomplicated dress in the style of the 20s is shaped like a rectangle. It is characterized by a low waistline, a straight bodice without darts or excessive decoration, and a skirt consisting of several flounces. The dress can reach to the knees or have asymmetrical skirt with extension on one side.

This dress looks less pretentious than dresses with full skirts, but girls aged 8-10 years will look great in it. Sew a similar dress from any fabric that drapes well, fabrics with shine are welcome. Rhinestones, fringe, velvet, and feathers are used for decoration.

What to wear with it?

To make the retro image authentic, you need to match it matching accessories. IN winter time The outfit can be complemented with a fur cape and long gloves. In summer, you should use a silk scarf or feather boa. You can put a long string of pearls on the girl. An interesting detail of the look will be a pillbox hat with a veil or artificial flowers.

Hairstyle

A Charleston style dress requires a matching hairstyle. In the 20s, wave hairstyles were very popular. You can create this wave hairstyle for your daughter yourself using styling products and hair clips. Long hair It’s worth putting it up in a messy bun or curling it into ringlets.

New look style

The middle of the last century went down in fashion history as the triumph of feminine models. Fitted dresses with full skirts are in fashion. It is in this style that the most popular retro dresses for girls today are presented. They are sewn from bright fabrics, often using a polka dot print or a floral pattern. This style in our country is often called the “Hipster” style, since these are the dresses that were popular during the period of the spread of this subculture.

Main features of this dress:

  • fitted bodice;
  • There may be no sleeves, but puffed sleeves look cute on children's dresses;
  • sun cut skirt;
  • a lush, multi-layered petticoat made of tulle or organza. Moreover, the petticoat can be of a contrasting color.

What to wear with it?

A dress in the “new look” style does not require a large number of accessories, as it is bright in itself. Almost the only decoration is a wide belt in a contrasting color; it can be tied with a lush bow on the back or decorated with an artificial flower.

You can wear short, bright beads around the girl’s neck. An interesting detail will be the short openwork gloves.

Hairstyles

To create the look, you can do a high ponytail or a babette style. Used to decorate hairstyles satin ribbons and hoops.

"Trapezoid" from the 60s

Less popular, but no less interesting, are retro dresses for children in the shape of a trapezoid. This style appeared in the sixties, it is distinguished by a loose silhouette, extremely laconic cut and a length well above the knees. If a model with a sleeve is used, then this part is also cut out in the shape of a trapezoid.

Despite such a simple cut, this style can also be worn in elegant children's dresses. You just need to choose the right fabric, such as velvet or jacquard. Dresses made of guipure on a cover look interesting. Dresses typically have contrasting trim running along the hem, sleeve hem, and front closure line. A dress made from fabric with a metallic effect looks elegant, or you can choose an outfit in a bright acid shade.

What to wear with it?

The laconic cut of the dress requires laconic accessories. Can be matched to dress plastic decorations– beads or bracelets.

Hairstyle

In the sixties, most girls curled their hair with curlers or had chemistry done. Of course, a child should not do perm. You can make your hairstyle much simpler: braid your daughter’s hair in several thin braids at night. In the morning, carefully undo your braids and your hairstyle is ready. The hair can be pulled back into a ponytail or pinned up at the temples.

The period in the development of fashion, which is now most often called “retro,” falls on the 40s – 60s. last century. Some fashion historians may classify later periods as retro, but most often this is the time frame that is established.

This time is characterized by an emphasis on feminine silhouettes, flared wide skirts with a narrow, tight top. The trendsetters at that time were such legends as Coco Chanel, Elsa Schiaparelli, Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior, actresses Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, Katharine Hepburn, Vivien Leigh.

The influence of this style is still felt today, especially today when femininity is back in fashion. Almost any woman can wear clothes in retro style; you just need to choose the right accessories and choose a cut in accordance with the characteristics of your figure.

How to choose a retro dress according to your figure

Retro style covers a fairly large period of time, and it includes dresses with a wide variety of cuts. This allows you to select suitable option for any figure.

Almost all dresses in the style of the retro era are suitable for women and girls with an hourglass figure type (pronounced waist, rounded hips and breasts of harmonious proportions). You should only avoid a boat-shaped neckline - it is better to opt for a V-shaped or closed one.

Slender women with a boyish figure with small breasts and narrow hips are better off opting for high-waisted dresses that emphasize the bust. A flared (but not too full) skirt will create additional volume on the hips. But the length should be chosen just below the knee.

Girls with a noticeable belly, as well as with an undefined waist with big breasts and not too wide hips, you should choose options with a high waist or straight dresses (this cut can already be found closer to the 70s, but it is also often classified as retro style). Skirts should be just above the knee.

For women with a pear-shaped figure (large hips with narrow shoulders and relatively small breasts), retro-style dresses will help make the upper part of the figure more feminine, giving a more rounded outline to the chest. It is worth choosing models with small sleeves, as a dress without sleeves will make your shoulders visually narrower.

For a figure characterized by the absence of a pronounced waist, rather wide hips and shoulders, a later version of a retro-style dress is best suited - with a straight, slightly widening silhouette, a high neckline, often with a collar.

This cut will make your figure more feminine. The skirt can be quite short. Or, on the contrary, you can choose the maximum length.

For those whose shoulders are much wider than their hips, retro sleeveless outfits with full skirt, which will make the proportions more harmonious and visually reduce the shoulders.

For girls who tend to be overweight, it is better to choose plain fabrics or vertical stripes.

For what occasions is a retro style outfit suitable?

This fashion trend is characterized by an emphasized femininity of the silhouette, which may be unnecessary when working in an office or with a strict dress code. Therefore, dresses in this style are best suited for the following situations:

  • city walks, romantic meetings;
  • festive, special events;
  • parties.

You can wear this dress to work if you choose a model with small sleeves and a not too tight top. You should also avoid fluffy skirts, draperies and other decorations in the work version of the dress. Preference in in this case given to plain fabrics in soothing colors.

In other cases, you can show your imagination and choose the style, color and accessories in accordance with your preferences and situation.

What colors, fabrics and patterns are preferable for retro style?

There are practically no restrictions for such dresses. Today you can combine the main features of this style with modern trends and details from other eras. If you need to create an image that is as close as possible to the time when such outfits were worn, then you can follow the following rules:

  • the color can be almost any, except for acidic ones, which were not yet available in clothes at that time. Also, golden and silver fabrics were not used as the main ones (with the exception of rare evening options);
  • the fabric itself should be quite dense, preference should be given to natural silk, cotton, satin, velvet, lace;
  • In the 50s and 60s, fabrics with polka dots, stripes, and French Vichy checks were popular.

Depending on the style, a light, flowing fabric or a dense, heavy fabric may be more suitable. A variety of laces were also used for layered draperies. different lengths.

Dress styles

The following styles are most characteristic and recognizable for this style:

  • a light, flowing dress made of plain fabrics, with a slightly high waist, cinched with a belt, a high or shallow neckline, most often sleeveless or with puff sleeves;
  • a dress with a tight-fitting top, emphasizing the roundness of the shape and a wide skirt in the shape of a bell or sun; often drapes of different lengths made of lace were placed along the bottom of the skirt. The neckline of such a dress should not be very deep. It is this cut, combined with polka dot fabric, that is most often repeated and used today. Large pleating could also be used for the skirt;
  • dress with a high neckline, three-quarter length sleeves and a fitted, tapered skirt. This style may well be suitable for work, since it does not involve any excesses in design;
  • a later version is an A-line dress, most often without a belt. With a crew neck or stand-up collar, which could also be with a lapel.

Evening dresses in retro style

For evening dresses in this style it is better to choose silk or satin fabrics. IN evening version The maximum length of the dress is preferred.

IN early dresses In this direction, the top is looser, the waist is slightly lowered. Characteristic feature is a large number of draperies and folds.

As a decoration option, a wide belt made of fabric in a contrasting color could be used, the long ends of which fell along the back of the skirt. Be sure to use a lot of jewelry, various capes, light scarves, boas.

In a later version, the top of the dress should fit the figure. Skirts usually fit around the hips, and widened towards the bottom and formed beautiful folds. The hem at the back could be slightly longer than at the front, resulting in a small train. Additional decorations could appear on top - large bows from the main fabric of the dress, a complex cut of the bodice.

The dress might not have sleeves, or the sleeves might be short. The neckline was usually shallow, even in retro-style evening dresses.

Wedding dresses

In such a dress the bride will look especially tender and romantic. To create a retro look, you can use lace as the main fabric and a satin or silk lining.

In this version of early retro, the top is sewn quite loosely, the skirt of maximum length is laid in loose folds or made almost straight, but loose. A wide white silk belt will complement the look. This cut also looks good with satin fabric.

If you are considering the option of a short dress, then you can take later retro samples as a model and sew a dress from satin fabric, with a tight-fitting top and a bell-shaped skirt.

Shoes and accessories for a retro dress

Dresses of this style are complemented by graceful, elegant shoes with stable heels. Tall, form-fitting heeled boots or neat boots are perfect for cooler weather. The color of the shoes is selected in accordance with the color of the dress - they may vary, but the combination should be harmonious.

It is better to select accessories that correspond to the time when dresses of a similar cut were worn. For example, early retro is characterized by pouch bags made of satin fabric or silk, while later periods are characterized by elegant case bags, sometimes with a strap.

Various brooches, earrings with tassels, clip-on earrings, elegant, intricate rings and bracelets are also welcome.

Makeup and hairstyle - the finishing touches to the retro look

An image in this style is characterized by neat styling, smooth shiny hair. IN early period girls did smooth hairstyles with textured curls framing the face. The hair can be tied up with an elastic band with lace. In later retro, volume and large waves appear, but the hair should lie neatly and be smooth.

The best styling options are various buns, hair collected and styled at the back with hairpins, barrettes into lush, neat hairstyles.

Retro style makeup shouldn't be too bright. The eyes are highlighted with dark shadows to create a smoky effect. You can slightly highlight the line of your cheekbones and cheeks with blush. Most typical for this style Matt lipstick rich colors.

Dress patterns

Retro style dresses should fit their owner perfectly. Most options use quite complex cutting elements that cannot be dealt with right away, even if you have certain sewing skills. All measurements must be taken carefully to ensure ready product it was a pleasure to wear and the work was not in vain.

Fashion is coming back, which is why the retro style has not lost popularity for years in a row. Anyone who has already found their own individual style, as well as those who are just defining themselves, would not mind wearing dresses, the style of which is reminiscent of the models of the last century, which were worn by women in the 20s-70s.

In the 20-30s, women's fashion developed under the spirit of emancipation: ladies began to wear more short dresses, lit cigarettes.

The main trend of the early 20th century was rough clothing and masculine images. Dresses with “wing-shaped” sleeves and low waists have become a fashion favorite. Women covered their bare shoulders and arms with boas or fur boas. Dresses were worn with round-toe shoes and fishnet stockings.

Retro dress 20s 30s

In 1926, Gabrielle Chanel, having made a major revolution, created her little black dress.

The model of this retro dress is still used by designers to this day. Long or short, strict or open - it takes pride of place in the collections of world brands. The dress is an incredible success among women because... small black dress makes any figure so feminine and so attractive. It incredibly suits all women without exception.

In the 30s, dress models became more open and seductive. A new accent appeared: it hugged the hips and received more short length to mid-calf and above. A little later, dress models appeared that emphasized the waist.

Retro dress 40s 50s

In the 40-50s, during the difficult post-war period, vulgarity was replaced by restraint and modesty. Christian Dior made a revolution of sorts: he invented the new look style. Models of dresses with a narrowed waist, a fitted bodice and a not too deep neckline, emphasizing the elegance and femininity of the figure, have come into fashion.

Dresses made of satin, silk, velvet, and crepe de Chine were very popular. There were a wide variety of colors: both plain, calm ones, and bright, colorful ones.
