Double boots for mountaineering. Guide to mountain boot models. Basically, the differences are this:

04.2018: Since this article was written, this niche in the market has been actively filled by these and other manufacturers; now there is a huge selection.

Until recently, I did not suspect the existence of such a specific type of shoe, until I encountered the conditions for its use :)

Climbing under the climbing route and going down the cliff in city sneakers turned out to be so uncomfortable that I decided that people should definitely come up with something for this! The phrase “approach shoes” was spinning in my head, literally “shoes for approaches” in the context of rock climbing or mountaineering. These are a cross between hiking shoes and climbing shoes.

They appeared because most often in the mountains, to the beginning of the route you need to walk along scree and climb simple rocks, but you still don’t want to put on tight rock shoes, and they are not always comfortable in others. Descending along rocky paths is the same story.

Different manufacturers put different meanings into the phrase “approach shoes.” Sometimes they make several models, some of which are closer to hiking shoes, others to climbing shoes, and others somewhere in the middle. Externally, “approach shoes” differ little from the masses fashionable sneakers"tourist style" All the differences are in the filling and price (the latter is not always the case).

Basically, the differences are as follows:

  • Quite a stiff sole, almost like a high hiking boot for walking with a backpack

For daily use in the city this is not convenient, but in the mountains on scree it is good. The rigid sole does not press through, it is stable when the foot does not rest on the entire area, but only on part: the side, toe or heel.

  • Sticky rubber

Soft, sticky rubber grips better on smooth rocks. Sometimes the same rubber is used as in climbing shoes. The opposite of this is rapid wear of the sole (abrasion, cuts).

  • Pronounced edges of the sole

Not everyone, but most. Allows you to stand on small holds.

  • Moderate tread

The toe of the shoe should hold up well against friction, therefore, the closer the nature of the sneaker is to a climbing shoe, the shallower the tread depth in front. In extreme cases, there is no tread on the toe of the sneaker at all. The protector on the heel is made 2-3 times less deep than in hiking boots.

  • Long lacing with wide gap

Most often, the lacing ends at the middle of the big toe. A large gap between the sides of the sneaker (where the tongue is) is needed so that you can tightly tighten the lacing on the descent or feel comfortable in thick socks. On the descent, it is necessary to tighten the lacing so that the big toes do not press against the toes of the sneakers (otherwise it will be very painful).

  • Hard heel edge

Needed to more confidently go down dirt slopes (it also works great on snowfields).

  • No bumper at the end of the toe

The closer the nature of the sneaker is to climbing shoes, the less likely it is to encounter this element. Instead of a bumper, the entire toe of the sneaker is made quite rigid. Almost always the toe of a sneaker is made like a rock shoe (rubber-coated). This reduces wear and makes climbing in the shoes easier.

Less is better. Unfortunately, almost all of them weigh from 800 grams in size 42, and my size 44/45 is a kilogram.

Finally

Shoes don’t have to be stamped “approach shoes” and nothing else :) They weigh a fair amount and are expensive. It is quite possible that sometimes the best option would be some kind of sneakers for trail or sky running (cross-country running in the mountains). Thanks to their vanishingly light weight, they can make any climber think))). Or maybe you can find suitable shoes in a cheap store.

What do I need from shoes on the approach to the rock?

  1. My approach starts from the threshold of the house, it should be full-fledged shoes in which you can come to the mountains.
  2. It should be comfortable to climb in and possible to climb with a backpack on rocks up to category III-IV. Here it’s already like this: 30-40 years ago 6a climbed in boots.
  3. They should be comfortable and safe to go down wet, steep paths.
  4. They should be light and durable (haha).
  5. They should be in a store where I can try them on.
  6. They should not wear out quickly.

P.S. In my opinion, sneakers for light hiking in the mountains, when the weight of the backpack does not exceed 10 kg, ideally fit into this category by type of use.

Here is a series of La Sportiva approach shoes, here are some 5.10 models (Guide Tennie, Camp Four) / 2018: Adidas bought 5.10 in 2011 and now there are effects, I don’t know whether they are good or bad/, . Almost every manufacturer of sports shoes has either a specialized range (no one can beat La Sportiva) or models.

2012.06.16

I go to Scarpa Zen. We worked for a season and a half in the mountains on weekends, trips to the rocks and winter in the city. The flight was normal, nothing was torn. Sneakers have seen everything: dirt and rocky paths, paths with roots, loose rocks and moraines of all sizes, climbing up to IV inclusive, ascents and descents along steep grassy and scree slopes, rain, mud, wet rocks, gliders on snowfields, cutting steps (!) in the snowfield during ascent and descent, kilometers of asphalt.

Advantages:

  • Fantastically durable!
  • They protect the foot well.
  • Very comfortable.
  • Dries quickly.
  • They breathe well (no membrane).
  • Grippy rubber, but wears out slowly.

Flaws:

  • They get wet instantly even in dew (but dry quickly).
  • They could have been lighter (1000 g of exactly a pair of size 44.5).
  • It doesn’t matter if they stay on the edges of sharp holds.

Will I buy it again? Don't know. The only thing that is certain is that they will be replaced by shoes from the same series - approach shoes. The difference between them and non-specialized ones is big.

After approaching the route through a 40-degree snowfield, I began to think much better about them. On the one hand, I want it to be lighter, on the other hand, I regularly find myself in conditions where the best aspects of these sneakers (which determine the weight) are revealed.

Walking on asphalt for a long time in them is uncomfortable: the sole is too hard and the heel is too hard. But that's not what they are intended for.

Winter 2015/2016

Finally, Scarpa Zen wore out - lasted 5 years. I wore them in the mountains under my backpack and a couple of times a week in the city. Exceptionally hardy. Bought new ones on sale - 5.10 Guide Tennie. 44.5 suited me, the weight of the pair was 880 g (120 g lighter than Scarp of the same size). If Scarpas fit on the foot like a shoe, then these are like felt boots: D Wide and “baggy”, but I think this will be a plus in the mountains when the foot swells on the second day after marathons on moraines and climbing.

Advantages:

  • Lighter than Scarpa Zen by 120 g in the same size (880 g for a pair of size 44.5).
  • Soft heel, good shock absorption.
  • They fit comfortably on the leg, wide and soft.
  • Cheap!
  • They breathe.
  • Rubber like on budget climbing shoes, more technical toe (compared to Scarpa Zen). Perhaps I can climb figure one and a half (UIAA) harder in this than in Scarpa.

Flaws:

  • On dirty/dusty tiles it’s like on ice (but in other cases it’s OK, clean tiles are no longer slippery).
  • Idiot thin and slippery laces, impossible to tie securely with traditional knots. It’s better to change it right away so as not to be nervous.

Everyday life constantly tires you with its bustle and monotony, so most people prefer to devote their free time active recreation in the mountains. Such walks allow you to feel positive emotions and a rush of adrenaline. To conquer steep slopes you will need not only to prepare professionally, but also to purchase one of the most important basics of mountain tourism - mountain boots. This type of shoe is particularly durable and has an impenetrable hard sole, which reliably protects the feet from all kinds of injuries in impassable rocks.

Features and Benefits

When choosing mountain boots, first of all you should pay attention not to the beautiful appearance and design, but on the quality and elasticity of the shoes.

Today, mountain boots are represented by a huge selection of models. All of them are characterized by reliability and safety during ascents. Depending on their purpose, mountaineering shoes are divided into mountain and trekking shoes. Most of these shoe models have a hard shaft and upper. In addition, the boots constantly maintain thermal balance; thanks to their special design, they can be used in conjunction with crampons.

Varieties

When going on a hiking trip, you need to worry about having comfortable shoes in advance. Since during ascents you will have to walk a lot and climb in difficult terrain, the boots must not only withstand enormous loads, but also not rub your feet, keep them dry and warm. Modern models of mountain shoes are represented by a wide range of products. They all differ in appearance, weight, and the presence of additional functions. There are the following types of mountain boots.

Climbing for mountaineering. This model is characterized by a natural leather upper and a hard sole. In addition, the boots are equipped with a special metal plate that additionally provides foot support. The external design of the shoe allows you to securely fix the foot, and the internal part is made of soft elastic materials. Mountaineering boots are not suitable for long-distance travel; they are designed for difficult mountain climbs.

For tourism . Mountain boots look similar to snowboard boots. Their main purpose is to overcome long walking distances. The outer material of the shoe is made of durable plastic that can withstand impacts. The boots have good insulation inside. The main feature of these boots is their excellent water resistance.

For hiking. The boots feature a slightly shorter upper and a thicker sole. For hiking in areas with high humidity, it is best to choose shoes with membrane fabric, but for summer tourism, boots with mesh pads are suitable. An important element of shoes is the presence of lacing. Hiking boots are comfortable, fit well on your feet, and do not wobble.

No triconi. Winter is considered one of the most wonderful periods for tourism and outdoor recreation. To cover long distances in snowfalls and frosts, you will need to purchase mountain boots without triconi. They are characterized by comfort, warmth and good stability. This model of winter sports shoes has a special sole made of ribbed material. These boots provide reliable protection against falls.

For hunting. The boots are characterized by practicality and comfort. Hunting shoes can withstand puddles, mud and rocks. Boot models should be chosen depending on the season. As a rule, such shoes have additional reinforcement of the toes and soles and are made of waterproof materials. There is also insulation inside the boots, so your feet are always protected from temperature changes. Most hunting boots are made from practical polymers such as silicone and nylon, so they are not subject to deformation or unraveling even in severe frosts.

Waterproof. This type of shoe is characterized by the presence of a tread sole that protects against slipping and falling. The boots are made of waterproof materials, so they are suitable for everyday wear.

Double. If you need to overcome high snowy peaks, then double mountain boots are the right choice. They are the lightest and warmest. The surface of the shoe does not get wet, as it is covered with a protective plastic layer. The rigidity of the sole ensures reliable fixation on rocky terrain. Most models of double boots feature a comfortable and original lacing system. These shoes can also be used for ski touring and winter hiking.

With rear entrance. For autumn and winter tourism you need to prepare not only suitable clothing, but also shoes. Boots should be of high quality, comfortable and warm. Recently, boots with rear entry have become very popular among sports shoes. Thanks to the huge range of colors available, the shoes can be worn with any outfit. There are models with fur and lace.

How to choose

Shoes are considered one of the most important elements of travel equipment. Mountain boots need to be chosen correctly, since the duration and comfort of the hike will depend on this. When buying ski boots, you should consider the following indicators.

Hardness index. This is the ability of the outer part of the boot to flex forward. Stiffness is especially important under high loads. The stiffness coefficient is calculated individually, depending on the weight. It can be from 40 to 160. It is worth paying attention to the fact that each shoe manufacturer has a different stiffness rating.

The angle of the boot. For beginner climbers and skiers, boots with a slight inclination at the top are suitable, but as for professionals, for more active skiing you will need shoes with a greater inclination.

Adjustments. The convenience of the trip depends on the presence of this element. Thanks to the adjustments, you can independently set the riding or walking mode, choose the level of rigidity and inclination of the boot.

You need to start choosing mountain boots by trying them on. The shoes must fit perfectly. It is recommended to try on boots wearing ski socks; they should not form wrinkles. The size of mountain boots is equal to the length of the foot and is indicated in centimeters. You need to put on and fasten your shoes while standing. The shoe clips do not fasten tightly at first, but then they are pressed tighter. If the shoe last does not correspond to the instep of the sole, you need to try on a different model.

When trying on boots, special attention is paid to sensations. If there is pain and discomfort, then this model is not suitable. If there is pain in the front of the leg, you need to check the tongue of the boot and the tightness of the clip. Your toes should not be pressed tightly into the front of the shoe. After trying on, you will need to do a little testing, namely, spend at least 15 minutes in the shoes. If everything is in order and there is no discomfort, then the boots are selected.

The safety of climbing largely depends on the quality and correct choice of climbing equipment. One of the important elements of a climber’s equipment is shoes. The type of boot you choose for climbing largely depends on where you intend to climb.

Types of boots for mountaineering and their choice

Mountaineering shoes are divided into tracking And mountain. The former are used for low climbs, usually in places with a warm or temperate climate. Mountain ones can be used in almost any conditions.

Trekking footwear is divided into sneakers, light and heavy boots. All of them are made of lightweight materials and cannot protect the foot from prolonged exposure to dampness and cold. The heavy variety can be used in conjunction with simple transitions.

Mountain boots are also divided into three groups:

  • Alpine boots have a fairly rigid top and shaft. Most models are suitable for use with cats.
  • One-and-a-half boots have two layers, this helps maintain normal thermal balance.
  • Double mountain boots are made using special insulation and are designed for climbing serious snowy peaks.

Before going to the store, decide what specific mountaineering boots you need. To do this, you need to decide which route your trip will take.

Most often, trekking shoes are recommended for beginners. Models vary slightly from manufacturer to manufacturer. Most often the difference lies in the width of the pad. Therefore, before making your final choice, try on several pairs from different manufacturers.

How to wear it in correctly

When purchasing, you should choose boots that are a little larger than you usually buy. This way, when descending from the top, your weight will put less pressure on thumb legs.

  • After purchasing, you should break in your shoes. You can’t go straight to the mountains in new boots. To wear it in, you just need to walk around the room in your new clothes. This needs to be done for at least an hour.
  • When climbing for the first time in new shoes, you should wrap your heels with adhesive tape. This will save your feet from painful blisters.

How to dry shoes correctly

Shoe maintenance on the go and at home differs. When you come back from climbing, you need to dry your boots.

  • When drying on a heat source, it is necessary to exclude the possibility of warping of the material. The easiest option is to stuff your shoes tightly with newspapers. Nowadays you can find special pads in specialized stores.
  • All mountain shoes are capable of absorbing moisture. Therefore, experienced athletes recommend treating it with special water-repellent sprays. Moreover, this should be done not only before leaving, but also during the ascent.
  • Ideally, you should have two pairs of shoes with you, but this is not always possible. Therefore, you will have to dry your boots right at the rest stop. The best option would be to use sunlight and wind. Experienced climbers can also dry their shoes near a fire, but there is a risk of warping. Therefore, this must be done very carefully.
  • The litter is dried separately from the boots. This is a mandatory rule. It is impossible to dry them without pulling them out, especially in hiking conditions. With wet bedding, your feet will get cold pretty quickly.

Additional features

An important characteristic of shoes for climbers is the presence or absence of a welt for attaching crampons. Trekking shoes are not intended for use with this equipment. Its upper and sole are too soft.
Boots for more serious hikes have a more rigid frame. They also have one or two welts. Moreover, in high-mountain variants there are always two of them. This is due to the need to wear crampons with a rigid type of fastening.

You should also pay attention to the choice of bedding. For simple hikes, membrane insoles are suitable. They will provide good ventilation. For more difficult multi-day climbs, it is better to use two-layer bedding. One layer is membrane, the second is made of rubber. This ensures their long service life.

Comfort during use depends on the correct choice of shoes for mountain climbing. Wearing the wrong shoes can cause injury. Also, when choosing, you should consider the possibility of using additional equipment.

They run small! You need to take a size larger than yours! If you wear size 42, you need to choose size 43!

The Nepal Evo GTX is the most versatile mountaineering boot. Real must have! The Nepal Evo GTX is excellent for classic and technical climbing and is easily adjustable thanks to its removable tongues. 3.2mm full-length water-repellent leather provides excellent durability. Great for cold days and where you need good support and protection on the trails. Care instructions Clean your boots after each use. All external and internal hinges should be thoroughly cleaned and dried to reduce the risk of rust on metal products. Care for the leather outside and inside the shoe using special products. Leave the boots to dry outdoors, protecting from direct sunlight and away from heating devices. La Sportiva recommends choosing your boot size carefully: your foot should fit well in the last. By keeping your foot snug in the boot, you minimize the risk of tearing the Gore-Tex inner membrane. Although La Sportiva boots are made from waterproof, specially treated leather that is resistant to dirt, improper use can cause the leather to dry out and become damaged. After each use, boots must be cleaned of dirt and dust by rinsing under a gentle stream of water. If necessary, the insole can be removed and the boots themselves can be placed in a cool, dry place for ventilation. It is best to remove the insole after each use and shake out any gravel that may have accidentally gotten inside the shoe and could damage the integrity of the Gore-Tex membrane. Do not place newspaper or other paper inside the boots as this may slow down the drying of the boots. Never dry your boots in the open sun or near heating devices. LEATHER CARE: Never treat these leathers with oil-containing products as this may adversely affect the waterproof performance and overall life of the boot. We recommend Nikwax water-repellent products for the care of your shoes. These products are suitable for caring for models with a Gore-Tex membrane. Products must be applied to damp skin to improve absorption into the boot fabric. The effect of this product lasts quite a long time, but not permanently. The product can be reapplied as needed or after each use in harsh conditions. Please be careful as these products darken the boot leather. GORE-TE CARE For leather models with a Gore-Tex membrane, we recommend using a water- and wax-based product such as Nikwax to simultaneously protect leather and nylon from water. These products do not affect the technical characteristics and “breathing” properties of materials, including Gore-Tex, but create the necessary waterproof film on the boot.

Do not place newspaper or other paper inside the boots as this may slow down the drying of the boots. Never dry your boots in the open sun or near heating devices. Never treat the upper materials with oil-containing products as this may adversely affect the waterproof performance and overall lifespan of the boot. We recommend Nikwax water-repellent products for the care of your shoes. These products are suitable for caring for models with a Gore-Tex membrane. Products must be applied to a damp surface to improve absorption into the boot fabric. The effect of this product lasts quite a long time, but not permanently. The product can be reapplied as needed or after each use in harsh conditions. GORE-TEX CARE We recommend using a water-based, wax-based product such as Nikwax for models with a Gore-Tex membrane to simultaneously protect leather and nylon from water. These products do not affect the technical characteristics and “breathing” properties of materials, including Gore-Tex, but create the necessary waterproof film on the boot.

CHIRUCA Nepal Pro mountain boots are the most powerful and durable from the model range of the Spanish shoe manufacturer. The Gore-Tex membrane provides excellent protection against water and has high performance in removing excess moisture from the surface of the skin (sweat). CHIRUCA Nepal Pro mountain boots are the standard of durability in footwear for tourism, hunting and mountaineering. Thick genuine leather in several layers with reinforcements on the heel protects against punctures and cuts even on sharp rocks. A special series of Vibram soles with increased wear resistance and an original tread for moving on unpaved surfaces with rocky rocks, and there are also special slots for installing spikes and crampons. Inside, the insole consists of two layers that soften shock loads on the foot when moving and remove moisture into the bottom porous layer of the insole, and antibacterial impregnation prevents unpleasant odor . The boot's cut with reinforcement at the heel increases durability and provides additional stability (protection against ankle injuries). Waterproof boots CHIRUCA NEPAL PRO with a Gore-Tex membrane are made of high quality genuine leather. The Gore-Tex membrane makes the boots absolutely waterproof, but at the same time allows your feet to “breathe”, thanks to the porous structure of the material. The Vibram Hunting outsole is made of natural rubber. "Vibram Hunting" is an excellent grip on all types of soil and rocky surfaces, as well as a guarantee of shoe durability. The sole of the NEPAL PRO boots is rigid and almost unbending, and has special grooves for attaching climbing crampons. All seams in the boot are made with overlap using Goodyear technology, which makes them completely waterproof. The two-layer insole will provide additional moisture removal. Hooks H.R.T. made of stainless steel and laces made of water-repellent polyester securely fix your foot in the boot. Waterproof leather boots with a Gore-Tex membrane. The Gore-Tex membrane provides excellent protection against water and has high vapor removal properties. Genuine leather impregnated with "Scotchgard" does not cause allergies and has good vapor removal due to the preservation of the pore structure. The "Vibram" outsole with increased wear resistance is made from natural rubber, which provides high grip and excellent stability on rough terrain, and most importantly, perfectly protects against heat loss. The shock-absorbing properties of the sole protect your joints from stress as much as possible. The insole consists of two layers of different densities. This combination provides additional convenience. Moisture is diverted into the lower porous layer of the insole, and antibacterial impregnation prevents the appearance of unpleasant odors. The boot's cut with reinforcement at the heel increases durability and provides additional stability (protection against ankle injuries). It is advisable to change shoes throughout the day so that different muscle groups work and your legs do not get tired, this is especially necessary for those who wear high heels. All seams are made using Goodyear technology - absolutely waterproof. Making overlapping seams will allow you to avoid tears, but many manufacturers have begun to practice butt seams on braid, which last no more than one season and flow like rivers inside the boot (whoever wants to buy cheap will always buy a pig in a poke). Few people think about it, but a heel is required for boots for active use (hunting, fishing (hiking). It allows you to increase the permeability and relieve the muscles of the foot (protection against flat feet). The most striking example of this is the instruction of Alexander the Great to use sandals with small heels for soldiers on long campaigns (the commander noticed that soldiers “in heels” walk much longer distances). Mountain boots CHIRUCA Nepal Pro - characteristics: pair weight -1.9 kg. (size 44); sole width 8-11 cm (size 44); outside instep coverage -47 cm (size 44); boot height -18 cm (size 44).

Lightweight, warm, breathable, comfortable boots for hiking, traveling and the winter city Shoe SoftShell with water-repellent impregnation and elements made of heat-resistant polyurethane Three-component sole: Bottom layer: EVA (EVA) Middle layer : PU insert with plastic stiffeners in the heel area Outer layer: Oil and petrol resistant rubber Lining: Fleece + Textile material with Hydroguard® membrane Recommended temperature range - up to -15C Sizes: 36-46 In the very name of the boots there are echoes of mountain landslides, carpets from edelweiss, alluring snowy peaks. However, the boots are not intended for mountaineering and high-altitude expeditions - rather for foothills, low altitudes, and cross-country hiking in winter and in the cold off-season. The boots securely fix the foot and ankle joint, protect the feet from stones and impacts, do not get wet and remove excess moisture from the inside, and protect from the cold. The top of the boots is made of shoe SoftShell, which combines the functions of moisture protection, wind protection and an insulating layer. The necessary rigidity of the upper is provided by elements made of heat-resistant polyurethane. The lining of the boots is a textile material with a “Hydroguard”® membrane, which breathes, does not get wet, removes excess moisture well, maintaining a comfortable temperature inside, and soft, cozy fleece protects the feet from moisture and from hypothermia. Reliable grip on the ground, stability on any terrain, the necessary rigidity and elasticity of the boot are ensured by a three-composition sole (oil- and petrol-resistant rubber + polyurethane insert with plastic stiffeners + EVA). Three-composition soles improve shock absorption and reduce the weight of the shoes. EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) is a lightweight and elastic material, similar to foam rubber, with excellent shock-absorbing properties. It springs well, quickly restores its shape after deformation, remains flexible at low temperatures and has a low degree of heat transfer. Polyurethane is a polymer-based product. The special structure makes it viscous under the influence of external force. At the same time it provides thermal insulation and shock absorption. Additional rigidity under the heel is provided by plastic reinforcements in the heel area. The outsole is made of oil- and petrol-resistant rubber with a deep tread that provides reliable traction on various types of soil in any weather. A special molded anatomical insole, highly resistant to wear and antibacterial properties, maintains the correct position of the foot and provides ventilation. The heel gently and reliably holds the ankle, and the rubber pad in the toe of the boot protects the toes from impact and increases the grip area on rocky terrain. A sewn-in tongue with soft filling reduces the likelihood of getting wet and snow, water and forest debris getting into the boot. Durable lacing secures the foot tightly, is easy to tighten and quickly release. To make it easier for you to “feel” the shoes, our stores have “slides” - simulators of complex terrain.

All external and internal hinges should be thoroughly cleaned and dried to reduce the risk of rust on metal products. Care for the leather outside and inside the shoe using special products. Leave the boots to dry outdoors, away from direct sunlight and away from heating devices. CARE OF GORE-TEX We recommend using water and wax-based products, such as Nikwax, for leather models with a Gore-Tex membrane to simultaneously protect leather and nylon from water. These products do not affect the technical characteristics and “breathing” properties of materials, including Gore-Tex, but create the necessary waterproof film on the boot.

Size 38-48 in 0.5 Pair weight 1750 g Color: Dark Green / Natural Anthracite / Red Description Karakorum Evo GTX are durable boots for classic mountaineering and mountain tourism. Each boot is made from a single piece of leather 2.8 millimeters thick with a special water-repellent treatment. Thus, a minimum number of seams is obtained, due to which the boot acquires additional strength. The boots have a Gore-Tex membrane, which does not allow moisture to pass inside, but at the same time has good breathability and wicks moisture away from the inside. This model is equipped with two welts for attaching hard crampons, but can also be used with semi-rigid or soft crampons. The boots have a wear-resistant Vibram sole, the quality of which has been tested by time. A rubber welt around the perimeter of the boot protects the leather from wear and tear during high-speed descents on scree. Thanks to Impact Brake System technology, which is a special tread pattern on the sole, better shock absorption is achieved, which reduces impact loads on joints and traction with terrain. The use of 3D Flex technology allows you to combine reliable ankle support with the flexibility of the boot needed for ease of movement. This is achieved through the use of thinner, more flexible leather in a specific area, so that the boot flexes forward as you step, but has flexural rigidity in the perpendicular plane, which will prevent ankle injury from awkward movement if you lace the boots tightly. Using special lace clips, you can independently adjust the tension in the foot and ankle areas.
