About this book

It seems that just yesterday I found myself in a small apartment with my thirteen-month-old daughter in her arms, almost without toys and without a car. Ideas for entertainment were rapidly ending, and then I decided to do baking with her.

We sat on the kitchen floor and recreated my favorite childhood culinary masterpiece, chocolate chip cookies. She stirred the dough, crumpled it in her hands and, of course, licked the bowl. For half an hour my daughter was happy; she was just as happy when the cookies arrived. Of course, then it was necessary to wash everything (mainly her), but it turned out to be not so difficult. Result? Happy mom, happy child... At that moment, I thought that I should cook with her more often.

This is exactly what I did all the following months, especially after her sister was born, because during the cooking we spent precious time alone with each other. She became more and more carried away, and when she turned two, I had a constant "helper" in her face, who perked up every time I went to the kitchen. However, I needed to feed my family, and with a small child in my arms, I didn't have enough time to do nothing but fun baking cakes and cookies.

To teach children how to beat with their fingertips, I asked them to imagine that they should "tickle" butter into flour. We use our own term: "tickling fingers".

I bought cookbooks for the kids and looked online to see if there were any meals my daughter could cook herself for the whole family. But I found either snacks that were prepared more for fun, or baby food, or something that she could not have done without help at her age. Most of the recipes were quite long and involved unsafe procedures, such as cutting raw meat, using sharp knives / graters, or ovenware. The recommendations indicated that these actions should be performed by an adult, but I considered that all this was not applicable in practice. Most likely, my daughter will get tired of waiting, or she will get upset and start shouting: "I myself, myself."

Having bought the fifth cookbook for kids, I gave up and decided to come up with my own recipes. I collected dishes for the preparation of which it was required to perform only the actions available to the child: choose, stir, crush, beat, brush, pour, cover, squeeze, tear off pieces - and excluded everything that she could not repeat on her own. I have made the recipes very short by reducing the number of ingredients and steps. I relaxed because my daughter was happy to do all the fun tasks, almost without asking me for help.

The more independence and control I gave her, the more she demonstrated agility and enthusiasm. Then I realized that she was showing a curiosity about food that I had not noticed before. My daughter was so happy and so proud that she cooked “everything herself” that she started eating foods and dishes that she didn’t even want to try before. If she did not cook the food herself, she was interested in what I was cooking, she was intrigued by unusual combinations, she ceased to be afraid of the new and to refuse it.

The secret to cooking successfully with very young children is simplicity.

I don’t remember a time when I didn’t know how to cook. It was a process that constantly took place in our home. I'm not a culinary expert at all and still learning, but my mom gave me the basics on which everything else is built; for this I will always be grateful to her, and I would like to pass this knowledge on to my children. You may think it is too early to start cooking with your 1 and a half year olds and therefore dangerous. But I didn’t hatch this plan: I just tried it. However, now that I personally observe all its advantages, it begins to seem to me that it was not such a crazy idea. Isn't it strange that almost all of us draw, make different crafts and sculpt from plasticine with young children, but at the same time the very idea of ​​cooking with them, using almost the same skills, seems to us something amazing. The goal of this book is to make cooking as easy, accessible and not scary as possible, especially for those who themselves are not very confident in the kitchen.

Cooking with babies

I believe that cooking at a very young age has had a positive impact on the lives of my children:

"Thanks for the food"

For them, food is not something that magically appears out of nowhere, but they can simply agree to it or refuse it. When children are directly involved, or at least aware of what is happening in the kitchen, they become interested in the result.

I am convinced that cooking increased their interest in food and, therefore, their desire to try new things. And this, in turn, allowed us to create a more pleasant atmosphere during the meal.

"I can do it!"

As I watch my 2-year-old daughter pour flour into a bowl without sprinkling anything, I realize how great cooking can be for developing a child's mindfulness and dexterity.

"I did it myself!"

Children really like it when they do something themselves and everyone can enjoy the results of their labors. We always act out the whole show, praising the one who was the "little chef", and our children should also give thanks for the food that the adults have prepared.

"Cooking is fun!"

It's always hard to find time to have fun together. I know that I always promise to get the kids paint, but in the end a week goes by and nothing happens. Cooking with babies, of course, takes a lot of time, but nevertheless, involving them, you combine business with pleasure, because you would still have to do it alone.

The secret to cooking successfully with very young children is simplicity. There is a chance that the process itself will make you nervous, but this is more likely to happen if you try to cook according to super complex recipes or do not think everything through properly. Simple recipes and the tips in this book will help you make cooking as easy and straightforward as possible. However, using clear recipes does not mean that food will be tasteless. Anyone whose mom, like mine, was an excellent home cook knows full well that food can be both simple and truly divine.
