Every year on September 21, the Orthodox Church celebrates big holiday- Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos. It was installed in honor of the miraculous birth of the Virgin Mary from elderly parents - the pious Anna and Joachim. The holiday was first mentioned in the 5th century.

There is little information about the Mother of God in the New Testament. The story of Her life has been brought to us by a legend according to which the parents of the Virgin Mary came from the clan of David. The Church calls them holy Fathers of God, because in the flesh they are the ancestors of Jesus.

Miraculously, the Divine Providence for the salvation of mankind manifested itself on Anna and Joachim: 50 years later married life childless Anna conceived and gave birth to the Divine Mother. Even before the birth of the girl, the Angel gave her the name Maria. She became the only and most holy Virgin, who was predicted to fulfill the prophecy of Isaiah: “Behold, the Virgin in her womb will bring and bear a Son, and they will call His name Immanuel” (Isa. 7:14).

history of the holiday

Like other feasts of the Mother of God, the establishment refers to a relatively late time. The official introduction of this holiday is attributed presumably to the end of the 6th or the beginning of the 7th century.

According to the author of the article in the English-language Catholic Encyclopedia (1913), the first mention of the feast of the Nativity of the Virgin is the hymns of Roman the Sweet Songwriter, written in the period from 536 to 556. The emergence of the holiday is probably associated with the strengthening of the veneration of the Virgin after the Ephesian Council under the influence of the later apocrypha. The holiday appeared, apparently, at the beginning of the 6th century, originally in the Greek church, and very soon after that it appeared in Rome and spread to their daughter churches.

The holiday was not widespread in the West and did not have a solemn service until the XII-XIII centuries. Only at the Council of Lyons (1245) Pope Innocent IV made the octave of the feast obligatory for the entire Western Church, and Pope Gregory XI (1370-1378) established a vigil (vigilia) with fasting and a special liturgy service for the feast.

How the feast of the Nativity of the Virgin is celebrated

Since the 6th century, believers rush to churches, where solemn services are performed. People praise God and the day when God gave the world in the form of the Most Pure Virgin hope for the coming of the Savior into the world.

The hostesses baked bread with the letters "R" and "B", which meant "The Nativity of the Mother of God." They were distributed to all family members, relatives, friends, and kept under the icon of Jesus Christ, until the day of His Nativity. It was believed that by eating a piece of this bread with prayer, it is possible to recover from all kinds of ailments.

Holy Land - Jerusalem and Nazareth - in these holidays become a center of pilgrimage. A huge stream of believers flows to the shrines associated with the earthly life of the Queen of Heaven. People especially tend to visit the source of the Virgin Mary and the Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin in Nazareth, the Greek Church of the Nativity of the Virgin in Jerusalem. According to Tradition, it was built on the site where the house of Mary's parents used to stand.

On this day, Heaven hears all the prayers of Orthodox Christians, therefore it is necessary to repent of sins, thank the Creator and prayerfully ask for the fulfillment of what is asked.

An important point! On the day of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, you must not consume alcoholic beverages, meat and non-fast foods. It's a fast day! Physical work is prohibited, taboo on quarrels, condemnation. It is necessary to maintain spiritual purity, perform virtue, help in word and deed.

On September 21, Orthodox Christians celebrate the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos. This event itself Orthodox Church understands as the beginning of the fulfillment of God's promised salvation of the human race from destruction. She was born, Who miraculously gave the world a Son - the Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Hundreds of candles burn in temples
And they go to kneel
Before the saint there are millions of people.

Mother of God Virgin Mary,
Cover us from trouble, protect us.
You who gave birth to a son for God,
Forgive us, your sinful children.

On the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos,
I want to ask for love
So that it comes true that the soul really wants,
And the heart pounded in my chest.
May the Lord keep from despondency,
And protects you from anger,
Turn to heaven in prayer
And the Lord will not pass by words.

On the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
I wish you happiness and endless strength,
Let the sorrows and sorrows rush away forever
And no one knocks on the house, no bitterness, no trouble.
Hope lives in the soul, and faith will not pass,
And even in a dark heart, love always lives
I want everyone in the world to open up to heaven,
And on a holiday, we visited the Orthodox Church again.

May the Mother of God with her holy power
Will fill souls and fill every home
Endless happiness, pure light and peace,
Kindness, love, faith in God and warmth.
