There is little information about the Mother of God in the New Testament. The story of Her life has been brought to us by a legend according to which the parents of the Virgin Mary came from the clan of David. According to the author of the article in the English-language Catholic Encyclopedia (1913), the first mention of the feast of the Nativity of the Virgin is the hymns of Roman the Sweet Songwriter, written in the period from 536 to 556. The emergence of the holiday is probably associated with the strengthening of the veneration of the Virgin after the Ephesian Council under the influence of the later apocrypha. The holiday appeared, apparently, at the beginning of the 6th century, originally in the Greek church, and very soon after that it appeared in Rome and spread to their daughter churches.

The holiday was not widespread in the West and did not have a solemn service until the XII-XIII centuries. Only at the Council of Lyons (1245) Pope Innocent IV made the octave of the feast obligatory for the entire Western Church, and Pope Gregory XI (1370-1378) established a vigil (vigilia) with fasting and a special liturgy service for the feast.
