new ones first

At one time I was looking for reviews on the ZIL Summer Creative Laboratory, I didn’t find anything, I enrolled my son at my own peril and risk. Now I will write a review because I have experience and hope that it will be useful to others.

My son attended Kino's shift in the second half of August. I’ll say right away that this is not a city camp in the usual sense, there is no division by age, no making friends of children, no analysis of the day - summing up, candles, master classes, creativity, no physical activity, even physical education, minutes of warm-up, even walks, going outside (to the park), just a trip to a cafe for breakfast/lunch and an hour-long break when the children were left to their own devices (as a rule, everyone was stuck on the phone).

The first week - continuous lectures, three hours continuously, then lunch, more lectures - and home. In the second week, the children were divided in half (about 15 people), each half had to shoot and edit a film.

Now about what was promised to me and what in fact did not turn out to be.
The range of children's ages was very large, from 10 years to 17, there was no division by age, this brought its own certain negativity (why didn’t anyone work with this?). 3 hours of lectures without a break is a lot not only for children, but also for adults, there was no change in the type of activity, collective exercises, or all the training techniques, the children slept during the lectures and did not listen throughout the first week. The curator cursed and asked homework; whoever didn’t complete it, she promised to kick me out. Homework Then I didn’t ask (why did I ask?).

I was promised that the children would be divided into groups of 5-6 people to shoot the video, but in reality they were divided into 2 groups of 15 people (of different ages), more than half of the children in the group were not involved. The curators accompanied the process very little, so one group barely met the deadline, the second did not meet the deadline at all, for some reason the children did it first, then it turned out that everything was done incorrectly (where were the adults?), they remade it, etc. 10-year-old children got tired earlier, walked around and interfered with work, the older ones got angry because they didn’t have time and didn’t want to explain. Children at 10 years old and at 17 years old require completely different support and levels of involvement, such a mixture reduces the effectiveness and satisfaction from work, it is unclear why this was not obvious to the organizers (were there not enough curators in order to save money? The curators did not know how to work with different age groups at all?).

The children introduced themselves in the standard way at the beginning, there was no closer acquaintance or unity, no one became friends. This is the first program after which my son had no friends or acquaintances left, everyone came, sat, left and just left on the last day, no farewell events.

Those who have been involved in photography and filmmaking for a long time and those who have never held a camera in their hands were enrolled in the program.
MacGuffin curator Daria also did not bring any particular passion for the topic of the shift; it was boring and uninteresting. The child planned to continue studying at MacGuffin, watched their classes and summer trips, and now doesn’t even remember it.

I was incredibly sorry not only for the money, but also for the lost time, wasted effort (since I did not choose another option), because before the change we communicated several times with various organizers of the summer laboratory; I, being an experienced parent of an amateur camp, I spoke all these moments, the child was waiting for this shift, new impressions, new friends, but nevertheless... I don’t know what it is - hackwork, saving, just a tick - pastime, whatever.

In general, if you live next to ZIL, at this very moment you have nowhere to put your child, you don’t mind paying 22 thousand, then at least he will be fed and looked after, no complaints here.
