July 28 is the Day of the Baptism of Rus'. Supported by the boyars, the Kiev prince Vladimir ordered in the summer of 988 the people of Kyiv to undergo a ritual of acquiring the Christian faith in the redemptive waters of the Dnieper, and threatened those who disobeyed with deportation to the outskirts of the principality. He became the baptizer of Holy Rus', and after his death he acquired the rank of saint. July 28 is the church day of remembrance of Prince Vladimir. He undertook to overcome the heterogeneity of pagan beliefs, introduced Christianity borrowed from Greece into Rus', establishing a single state religion - the foundation for the future unification of a united Rus' from warring principalities.
In 2010, the memorable Day of the Baptism of Rus' was approved by law. Solemn prayer services are held in churches everywhere, and secular authorities organize festivities and free concerts for all Russians.
