Fixing hair color after dyeing and maintaining the result is a very simple task, provided that special cosmetics are used. To do this, you need to select various sprays, masks, creams, balms and shampoos, which also need to be used correctly. Healthy hair care, as well as the use of various folk recipes, are also important here.

Cosmetic products for preserving hair color after dyeing

Each time after removing dye from hair, it must be washed with shampoo to fix the resulting color. After this, special sprays, balms, masks, creams, and conditioners should be added to the list of care products. All this can be used both together and separately, but in the latter case the result may be less impressive.

We invite you to learn more about the different types of funds:

  • Sprays. They are applied to dry, washed and towel-dried hair and left until absorbed. After this, it is recommended to comb the curls. Such products should be used every time after washing your hair. They are useful because they protect strands from ultraviolet radiation and paint washing out. You should buy those products that say: “For colored hair” or “To maintain hair color.” A very good product is Matrix Total Results Color Obsessed Miracle Treat 12, which is sold in a 150 ml container and is produced in the USA. Great alternatives are Keen Keratin Spray Color and ID Hair Gold 911 Rescue Spray.
  • Creams. This is quite rare, but at the same time the most effective remedy due to its deep penetration into the hair. It should be applied to damp, washed strands and left for 3-5 minutes. After this, you need to rinse off the composition with clean water and use shampoo. The optimal frequency of use is 1-2 times a week. With their help, the color of the curls becomes more saturated, dullness is prevented from roots to ends. Here we recommend Revlon Professional Interactives Color Sublime Treatment, available in a 200 ml jar.
  • Serums. The composition of these products must necessarily include biologically active components - oils, plant extracts, etc., which help maintain the brightness and durability of the color after dyeing. They do not weigh down the strands and give them a natural shine, but for this you need to treat clean, dry or damp hair along the entire length 2-3 times a week, you do not need to rinse anything off. One of the most popular serums is Estel Professional Beauty Hair Lab Color Prophylactic Serum, produced in Russia. It is sold in a 30 ml tube and looks similar to regular paint.
  • Balms. Such products are especially relevant in the first minutes after dyeing; they help consolidate the result. For this purpose, you need to use special stabilizers with keratin, natural biopolymers, oils, etc. Curex from the well-known brand Estel Professional can be cited as a fairly effective balm. You need to use it 1-2 times a week, applying it to damp hair and rinsing off 3 minutes later with warm water.
Those who want to maintain their hair color for as long as possible can choose special milk, helping to protect them from sun fading and exposure to water. The principle of its use is the same as in the case of cream: the composition should be applied to damp hair, distributed evenly, let it act for 5 minutes and rinse with plenty of water. Kerastase Reflection Fondant Chromatique, made in France, which contains rice bran oil and vitamin E, is considered very good. Two types of packaging are available for sale - 200 ml and 1000 ml.

In addition to balms, creams, serums and sprays, you can use air conditioners, which not only make it easier to comb your hair, but also make its color more saturated. Their advantage lies in the possibility of daily use without harm to curls. They seal the dye pigment in the hair structure and prevent fading. To do this, it is advisable to choose a leave-in product that can be applied and left until absorbed. This is exactly what BioSilk Color Therapy Lock & Protect Leave-In Treatment is, which is produced in the USA without parabens and based on red tea extract, silk proteins and passion fruit oil.

Those who want to consolidate the result immediately after coloring should pay attention to special shampoos, preserving hair color, marked “Professional”. For example, a good option is Kleral System Post Color Shampoo, which can be used by all people over 18 years of age. There are no restrictions on the frequency of use; even daily application is allowed. The product is sold in a container of 1000 ml; it is produced in Italy. For the shampoo to help, it must be evenly distributed over the surface, foamed well, and after 1-2 minutes, thoroughly rinsed with clean water.

For washing your hair after coloring and in the first two weeks, it is better to use technical shampoo, made on the basis of an acid formula. It easily washes off the remaining paint, but does not remove the pigment. In addition, it strengthens damaged curls, gives them shine and softness. These are the products that are used in beauty salons after painting.

Technical and ordinary shampoo for colored hair have some differences. So, the first one is intended specifically to consolidate the result, and the last one simply maintains the current color.

Separately, it is necessary to mention the possibilities tint shampoos, which will be useful for those whose strands have already lost color, brightness and shine. They can lighten or darken the hair slightly, depending on the product. It is best to buy them 1-2 shades lighter or darker than the resulting shade after dyeing. But, naturally, you shouldn’t expect a stunning effect from the first wash; it can be observed after at least a few weeks. To do this, it is enough to use shampoo every 3-4 days.

Tinted shampoos are sold both in solid packaging and in bags of 35-1000 ml. Basically, they are universal and designed for all hair types, but there are exceptions, so you need to look at the label carefully. They are applied to the strands with gentle massage movements and left until washed off for about 10 minutes, depending on the desired color intensity.

When your curls become dull, ready-made healing masks, sold in jars or bags. When purchasing them, you should make sure that the packaging says “For colored hair.” Here you can offer Orizya Color Protection Mask, which not only saves you from color fading, but also makes your strands silky, manageable and shiny. This mask is made in Italy and is sold in 200 ml containers.

Folk remedies for preserving hair color after dyeing

One of the most effective ways is to use coconut oil. If it has a solid form (cheese-pressed), then before use you need to melt it in a water bath. Next, the product should be rubbed into damp strands along the entire length from roots to ends, left for 30 minutes under a cap and then rinsed with warm water.

In addition, various products will help correct the situation - eggs, oils, coffee, tea, mustard. Herbs, especially chamomile, will be no less useful.

Products prepared according to the following recipes are very effective:

  1. Break two yolks into a metal bowl, heat them over low heat and add 3 tbsp. l. water. Stir the mixture and apply it to your hair from roots to ends, you can use a brush for this. Next, leave the product for 30 minutes and then wash your hair with shampoo for colored hair.
  2. Brew dried chamomile, which you can buy at the pharmacy. Pour boiling water (200 ml) over it (3 tablespoons) and leave covered for half an hour. Then strain the product and rinse your hair with the resulting decoction. Repeat this procedure 2 times a week before washing your hair with shampoo.
  3. Blondes can add fresh lemon juice to ready-made hair care products, about 3 tbsp. l. for 200 ml. Apply this composition to your hair along the entire length, leave for 5 minutes and rinse with water.
  4. A mustard mask also helps a lot, for the preparation of which you need to combine mustard powder (2 tbsp), olive oil (3 tbsp) and sugar (1 tsp). Rub all this thoroughly and rub it into your hair with your fingers. Leave the product here for 10 minutes, after wrapping it in cling film. After this time, thoroughly rinse the strands with a special shampoo and dry them with a towel. To obtain the desired effect, it is enough to carry out this procedure once a week.
  5. A kefir mask, which is prepared from a dairy product of the highest fat content (5 tbsp), honey (1 tbsp) and one yolk, also lightens hair well. Mix all these components, use a brush to lubricate the strands with the prepared mixture and wait 10 minutes. After this time, rinse off the composition with clean water and use shampoo. Carry out this procedure once a week.
  6. Those who have dyed their hair red should pay attention to the infusion of hibiscus, which gives the hair a beautiful copper tint. Pour it (3 tablespoons) into boiling water (300 ml) and cook for two minutes. After this, strain the mixture, cool and rinse your hair with it, and after 5 minutes, rinse the strands with clean water. Repeat these steps 1-2 times a week.
  7. Those with black hair are advised to use roasted coffee. First, hold it in the frying pan for a few minutes, then pour boiling water in a ratio of 3:1 and stir well until the powder is completely dissolved. Next, use a brush to apply the thickener to all curls, starting from the roots. Cover your head with film and after 10 minutes, wash off the mask with shampoo.
  8. Brown-haired women are recommended to wash their hair with black tea. Brew it, pour 4 tbsp. l. leaves or granules with boiled water (300 ml). Then strain the mixture, comb your hair and rinse it with the finished product without using shampoo. It is completely harmless, so it can be used even every day, but after this, the curls must be rinsed with clean water.
  9. For light brown hair, a mask of cinnamon and vinegar, combined in such quantities to form a thick paste, is well suited. It is applied to the strands along the entire length, kept for about 5 minutes under cling film and washed off with warm water. Then the curls should be washed with shampoo, otherwise an unpleasant odor will remain.

Note! The cling film enhances the effect of the masks, creating a thermal effect.

Rules for caring for dyed hair to preserve color

To take care of your hair color, you need to protect it from the negative effects of sunlight. That is why it is better to wear a hat in the summer, especially on the beach, swim in the sea or pool only with a cap on your head, and try not to get caught in the rain without an umbrella.

By the way, after bathing, the strands should always be rinsed with clean water.

To maintain a beautiful color, it is important to avoid a hair dryer, the hot air of which destroys the color pigment. If you still cannot refuse it, then you should at least choose a gentle mode with a low temperature. But you still have to say goodbye to curling irons and straighteners for straightening curls. Electric rollers are also a bad option because they heat up the hair.

You should also not overuse styling products - gels, mousses, varnishes, since they contain a lot of “chemical” substances that accelerate the leaching of pigment.

It is highly undesirable to wash your hair frequently - the optimal break between procedures is 4-5 days, but, of course, the oilier the hair, the shorter it should be.

We have looked in detail at all the ways to preserve your hair color after dyeing; you just need to choose any suitable one and strictly follow all the instructions. The correct approach to solving the problem of washing out coloring pigment from curls will extend their life, brightness and shine.

The most common (and saddest - considering the time and money spent) problem that we encounter after dyeing is not irritated scalp or split ends, but a dull, dull color. Creative partner of L’Oréal Professionnel Alexey Nagorsky told me how to care for dyed hair so that after 10 days you don’t have to regret going to the salon. We asked him the 5 most important questions regarding color protection and received comprehensive answers.

Why does paint wash out so quickly?

Dyeing is a chemical process when the natural pigment in the hair structure is replaced by an artificial one. The dye cannot remain on the hair indefinitely: it is constantly subjected to too strong mechanical stress, which is why the artificial particles gradually “fall off”, leaving it without pigment.

The base on which the dye is applied and the condition of the hair are the primary things to pay attention to before dyeing.

On porous and/or damaged hair, the dye adheres worst of all, since its scales are open, and there is simply nowhere for the pigment to linger. It will last longer on healthy (and especially pristinely free from chemical experiments) hair ( read also: “Princesses also have hair problems (we learn from their mistakes)”). The preservation of color also depends on the complementarity of the natural shade and the shade of the paint. If your hair is dark brown, and you dyed it chocolate, then with proper care you can maintain the color until the next scheduled coloring (3-4 weeks). With drastic changes ─ moving from a dark base to a light one and vice versa ─ maintaining the result is much more difficult.

Does the life of a color depend on the cost of the paint?

Yes, but maybe not in the way you thought. Dyes for home use are actually more durable than professional dyes. Salon dyes, even very persistent ones, contain less pigment than ordinary “home” dyes: it means that the hairdresser-stylist collects the color from several shades of dye, rather than dyeing the hair along the entire length and depth with one color. Generally speaking, golden and brown shades last best on hair, while red, red and cold blonde have a lower level of durability.

Definitely not. Products for colored hair really preserve color: they contain water-soluble silicones that envelop the hair and prevent the pigment from leaving it quickly. It is good to use sulfate-free shampoos, which gently cleanse the hair while minimally washing out the artificial pigment.

Well, the most important rule is to use a range to maintain hair of the same brand as the dye (it doesn’t matter what kind of dye it was - professional or homemade). Manufacturers, when creating products, monitor the recipe and combination of components in the dye and additional line. You cannot maintain professional coloring at a good level with shampoos and masks from the mass market ─ you will quickly be disappointed and, as a result, will blame the stylist.

What care products should those who regularly dye their hair have at home?

Shampoo for colored hair - use with every wash;

Mask – 1-2 times a week;

Conditioner or any rinse-off treatment - every time you wash your hair (but not on the day of using the mask);

Leave-in care - after every hair wash;

Thermal protection – before blow-drying and using stylers.

Kerastase, Blond Absolu, Ultra-Violet mask, nourishing purple mask that neutralizes yellow undertones

L"Oreal Elseve, laminating shampoo

Kerastase, Chromatique milk, created to protect colored or highlighted hair

Ideally, this must-have is supplemented with special tint products: their pigments fill the voids formed after the color is washed out with a similar dye and help to last relatively painlessly for up to 1.5 months after dyeing.

How to properly care for colored hair?

Subsequent care after dyeing is of great importance for preserving the color. All hair restoration products reduce the level of durability of the dye, so there is no need to restore your hair immediately after “fresh” dyeing (even if they require it, you need to wait a little). For all types of coloring, nourishing and moisturizing lines are suitable, but do not restore hair quality.

How to preserve color?

To maximize the longevity of color, the most important thing is to follow three basic rules: maintain the time of washing your hair, choose the right shampoo and use conditioner.

After coloring, colorists recommend wash your hair no earlier than every 3 days. Ideally, if 4-5 days pass, but we all understand perfectly well that in most cases this is simply impossible. Such a long period will allow the paint to better absorb into the cuticle and take hold. In order for the dye molecules to wash out less, you will also have to wash your hair less often. So, for example, if you are used to carrying out this procedure once every two days, increase the interval by another 1-2 days. In any case, you cannot wash “colored” hair every day or even every other day, otherwise the dye will be washed out after 1.5–2 weeks.

Be sure to use for washing shampoo for colored hair, or better yet, the one you used to wash off your paint in a beauty salon. No aggressive products containing sulfates, salts or petroleum products. These harmful substances not only spoil and dehydrate the hair, but also cause almost immediate color fading. It is also recommended to refrain from shampoos for deep cleansing of the scalp for the first few weeks - they not only speed up blood circulation, but also intensively wash out the dye.

Necessarily use tinted shampoos. In addition to the main action - cleansing and care, they will contribute to the accumulation of color and enhance its brightness. Naturally, such products are selected according to hair color, and it is better to immediately consult with a hairdresser about this. If possible, buy tinted shampoo from the salon where you dyed your hair.

If you are taking a shower and are not going to wash your hair, wear a cap. After each wash, be sure to apply a conditioner, balm or mask for colored hair (preferably one that provides super-deep penetration) - this way your hair will always be hydrated, shiny, smooth and retain its brightness longer. It would be nice periodically use the popular cowashing technique and wash your hair with conditioner or mask.

If your hair gets dirty often, use dry shampoo for colored hair. It will help keep the color bright and your hair clean and fresh. Just be sure to pay attention that after use there are no white flakes left on your hair, which will resemble dandruff.

It is not recommended to use too hot water to wash your hair. Ideally, at room temperature or even a little cooler (but not icy). Hot water quickly washes out the dye because it opens the cuticle and causes the scalp to more actively secrete oil, causing the hair to become dirty faster, while cool water does the opposite. So it turns out that after washing your hair with hot water, it is not so smooth and elastic, it gets tangled faster and needs frequent washing, and after using cool water it looks as if you just had lamination or Botox done at a beauty salon. By the way, lamination procedure It also perfectly preserves color due to the fact that the film created on the surface of the hair protects it from the negative influence of the environment, removes porosity, fills cracks, and also retains moisture and vitamins.

Don't forget to use leave-in color protection products. It is better if they work in several directions: protect from the effects of thermal tools (iron irons, hair dryers, curling irons), ultraviolet radiation, chlorine-containing water and other negative influences. In the summer, especially on vacation and when the sun is mercilessly beating down, use a moisturizing spray with SPF 10–15 throughout the day.

If you've recently dyed your hair, these tips will help you maintain the desired results for a long time and prevent you from quickly having to go to the salon again.

Take a break before coloring

A few days before you go to the salon for a coloring procedure, give your hair a rest and do not use styling products. In this case, you can go to the procedure with curls free of plaque. You should not wash your hair the evening before going to the hairdresser, however, you should try to avoid excess product on your hair, then the dye will penetrate better into the hair structure, and the result will be noticeable longer. This is a very simple nuance, but it really gives an impressive result.

Soften your hair before coloring

What product should you use before visiting the salon? Deep conditioner! Moisturize your locks a few days before coloring so they'll be stronger when you visit your hairdresser. If your hair is excessively dry or has gone through too many treatments, this can become a serious problem and the result after coloring will not be what you dreamed of. Try to keep your hair in optimal condition and avoid using too intense styling products. This will help you achieve the desired result.

Wait a few days before washing

After you've dyed your hair, wait a few days before you wash your hair to prevent the dye from washing off too quickly. Waiting will allow the dye to set into the hair structure and remain under the cuticle. If more than forty-eight hours have passed since the procedure, you can return to your usual hair care schedule. This ensures that the shade stays in your hair longer.

Don't wash your hair too often

You've probably already heard that washing your hair every day is detrimental to your hair's health. Some natural oils will not harm your hair. If your locks tend to be dry, you may be fine with washing your hair every three days or less. If your hair is oily or you exercise daily, you will need to use shampoo more often. The solution may be dry shampoo, which helps when the scalp begins to become oily. With its help, you can wash your hair less often.

Wash your hair with cool water

Hot showers can cause hair color to fade quickly. When water is too hot, it causes the hair cuticle to open. If you have just recently undergone a coloring procedure, the result will be that the color will leave your hair structure much faster than it should. Try to use cooler water in the shower if you want to prevent the problem. This is also beneficial because your hair will appear smoother and shinier! For maximum effect, you can finish washing by rinsing your hair with cold water.

Use a shower filter

Hard water contains chlorine, minerals and calcium, which are hard on hair and can react with chemicals after coloring. If you notice tightness in your skin after taking a shower, you most likely have hard water. Minerals from it can accumulate on the hair and change the color shade. Use a shower filter to avoid these unpleasant consequences. This will also have a positive effect on your skin.

Buy the right shampoo

Choose shampoo and conditioner that are sulfate-free. It is no coincidence that sulfates have received such a negative reputation. They work as a strong cleanser that destroys expensive color results. Choose care products that are created specifically for colored hair and do not affect the color in any way. This will allow you to achieve healthy hair and maintain its beauty.

Consider a pigmented shampoo

You can choose shampoo and conditioner with a little added pigment, which will allow you to maintain the vibrancy of the color while washing your hair. There are ready-made products of this kind, but you can simply add your color to shampoo to create a product exactly for your shade. This is especially true for bright shades like red or light ones that can fade or take on a different undertone.

Add protection to your routine

Buy yourself a special care product after coloring to extend the life of the shade. This will help you moisturize your hair and preserve the color for a long time, in addition, such products provide your curls with a luxurious shine. You can ask your stylist which product of this type is best suited.

Avoid intensive products

Salt sprays give your hair pleasant waves, but by doing so you run the risk of losing moisture in the hair structure. By using intense products that can dry out your curls, you will lose more color after coloring. This is due to the fact that such products deprive your hair of nutrients, which means that the strands cease to be strong and are no longer able to fully retain the color.

Be careful with deep conditioning

If you use deep conditioner too often, your hair color may fade faster. If your hair doesn't hold color and you feel like your strands are too dry, deep conditioning may not be the best choice. In the process, the hair actually becomes softer, but at the same time loses its color. Use moisturizers in moderation, but don't make them the main part of your beauty routine.

Avoid hot styling products

If you've heavily bleached your hair to achieve a platinum or pastel pink shade, you may want to give up your straightening iron and hair dryer for a while. If you use heat styling products immediately after intensive coloring, the light shade may darken and damage to the hair will become more intense. Remember that the acid-base balance is not restored in the hair in one day and is not stabilized after one wash. Be very careful when using elevated temperatures. If you absolutely must use such a styling device, also use heat-protective products to minimize the risk to your colored locks.

Protect your hair from environmental influences

If you plan to spend a lot of time outdoors, prep your hair with a protectant with SPF to prevent color fading. If you don't have such a product, you can use coconut oil - researchers have found that this product has sunscreen properties. This way you can protect your hair and nourish it. Most store-bought hair protection products use coconut or sunflower oil.

Use a delicate comb

After your hair has been bleached, it will be more sensitive than usual, so you'll want to use a gentle brush to keep your locks healthy. Use a comb that you would use when brushing your child's hair. If the comb scratches your scalp or is made of metal, discard it.

Why does hair become dull?

Few people know that after dyeing with permanent dyes, residual alkali settles on the hair and scalp. Its effect on hair is quite aggressive, and in the absence of proper care it can also last quite long - from one to three months. Alkali disrupts the structure of the hair, it becomes porous, and as a result, the dye pigments are washed out very quickly.

Hair becomes lifeless and may even fall out. Hair dyed in light colors, highlighted and bleached suffers the most. Brunettes are luckier in this case, since dark-colored paints contain a minimal amount of aggressive substances (ammonia and hydrogen peroxide). But regardless of this, both dark and blond hair require special care after dyeing. Fortunately, today there are a lot of funds for this.

"Bright" rules

Immediately after staining, it is necessary to neutralize the alkali as much as possible. In salons, special stabilizer shampoos are used for these purposes. If you dye your hair at home, we recommend purchasing dyes that come with a conditioner. It changes the acidity of the environment, helps the cuticle scales close, thereby preserving the color pigments inside the hair. You can “fix” the color, in case you don’t have a stabilizer at hand, by rinsing your hair with water with the addition of lemon juice (0.5 tablespoon per 1 liter of water).

When making a decision, you will have to take care of purchasing new care products, namely those labeled “for colored hair.” For bleached hair, it is advisable to purchase shampoo with an acidic pH: its value should be below 5.2 (this information is indicated on the label).

Don't skimp on air conditioners. They usually contain protein structures that effectively restore intercellular connections inside damaged hair. Shampoo and conditioner must be of the same series, since the caring components in them complement and enhance each other’s effects. By adding a mask to this set, you will receive comprehensive care for your hair.

By the way, modern products for colored hair include bio-components that revitalize the color. They should be selected depending on the shade obtained during dyeing. Brunettes should pay attention to chestnut, hazelnut and cocoa butter extracts; for brown-haired women, cinnamon and henna extracts are needed. Blondes should take into account their type of blonde when choosing care products.

For example, chamomile extract can fill warm shades with sunny highlights, and give ashen shades an unwanted yellowness. Blondes should not refuse special care products for colored hair for another reason: they contain components that neutralize chlorine and suppress the activity of iron ions contained in ordinary tap water and contributing to the appearance of red and greenish tints on bleached hair.

  • You can shampoo for colored hair as often as before coloring, it is important to do it correctly: apply shampoo twice in small portions only to the scalp. When you rinse off the shampoo, the foam will cleanse the hair itself.
  • If, along with preserving color, it is necessary to solve problems with the scalp or hair that suddenly arise, you can and should combine products from the same brand. For example, alternate shampoo for colored hair with another shampoo. You can even do this at the same time: wash your hair once with shampoo for colored hair, and reapply shampoo for the problem that exists, for example, shampoo for oily scalp and dry hair
  • In order for your hair to maintain its shine, after each wash you should use conditioner (for oily hair, apply it only to your hair, without touching the roots) and use a hair mask at least twice a week
  • Frequent dyeing (more than once every month and a half) quickly destroys the structure of the hair, which does not contribute to the further preservation of color; rather, on the contrary, it will wash out faster each time. If the color has lost its saturation, but it’s too early to apply makeup, purchase tint products; they will help restore the brightness and shine of your hair without causing any harm to it.
